Topic: Webm not working?

Posted under General

Hey there, haven't been around the site in a while and now i discovered that Webm stopped working for me, its definitely something with the site as i can see the format in any other site except this one, as it seems more that the webm refuses to load other than the format not being supported.

Also i've tried to click the download link to maybe get around it but it sends me to a Website Offline page.

Is this a known issue on the site? is there fix?

Well, I'm not having any problems getting webm videos to play. But that does sound frustrating.

What sorts of symptoms are you getting: is it refusing to load any image or video box at all? Is it just loading a white box? Or does it seem to load ok, it just doesn't seem to play? Because webm files on e621 don't play automatically, you have to click the play button first (which is in the bottom middle of the video box) before it will play.

A few more questions: how are you accessing the site (phone? desktop? tablet?) and what browser are you using? That sort of information can help narrow down what might be happening.

...guess its just due high activity.. during these hours E6 breaks due high usage..
Maybe just thought that its a problem with webm because those files are bigger than all other files and site refuses your request?

Nah, the size of the file doesn't matter, it's more the order in which the site processes the requests, how many requests are being processed, and what part of the server is busy. Even 75+ MB files are just a tiny blip of the total server load, most of the delays you see are actually just waiting for a response from the server (If you'll notice, it's rare to see download speeds significantly slower than your own connection speed, even during high load times).

Also the caching between you and the servers can affect it too (I don't know offhand if/how webm files are cached on here, but I know we have some redundancy through Cloudflare).

Yeah its definitely not traffic or size, since i cant see even older webms that ive loaded before, and i havent really tried accessing at other hours, but i really doubt traffic is that heavy for me to not load at all.

The symptoms are that it recognizes the file as webm, it gives me the small play button and bar, but it stays black and never loads, and again webms worked perfectly before here for me, and still work like a charm on other sites, this is a new issue.

And i'm on Desktop and Chrome, ive tried a couple of other browsers but the issue seems persistent, and i wouldn't really move away from chrome just for webms on this site.

Hmmm... This might be a bit dumb but do you have enough RAM? I know it's unlikely, but just in case. Maybe you have some settings or a content blocker that prevent WEBM from playing

Yeah, im almost 100% its not on my end, as i can watch any other site with webms right now, and yeah i thought about that, but i only have adblock and i ive tried to load the page without it but it makes no difference.

I sure it has to do with the error it gives me when i try to download the webms, as it tell's me the site is offline and gives me the error 522

OK! so i just "fixed it", i just used a proxy and there it is! working like a charm.

So this is definitely a site issue, a rare one it seems.
