While I understand it's the series name, that should be fixed too.... it causes the sonic character tag to show up even when he isn't present.
There needs to be a sonic character tag and a sonic (franchise) copyright tag.

could always change the character tag to sonic_the_hedgehog_(character) as well as making the franchise tag, right?

I think that just aliasing sonic -> sonic_(series) rather than sonic_the_hedgehog would probably eliminate the bulk of the mistags.

Sounds like a plan.
Certainly better than keeping the current implication. I gave up long ago on trying to keep that tag clean.

I've made the following changes:
Since both "Sonic" and "Sonic the Hedgehog" double as names for the character and the series (and have been getting mixed up for years), I've aliased both over to sonic_(series) and made a new tag (sonic_(sonic)) to use for the character.
Hopefully this should help to keep the tag clean in the long run.

I've noticed that regular users are frequently confused by that. There's been several instances where they can't figure out what character tag to use, after trying both sonic and sonic_the_hedgehog.
Sonic_(character) would probably work slightly better as the main character tag. It seems more obvious than, er, sonic_sonic. ...or maybe sonic_the_hedgehog_(character) would work, though that's damn long.
Alternately, sonic_the_hedgehog could simply be restored as the character tag. The main reason it got so messy was because sonic (tagged for both the series and the character) was aliased to it. Since that alias was fixed, I doubt it'd actually get mistagged much.

Oh, hmm. I suppose that would be kind of confusing now that I think about it.
I'll make a note to move these over (likely back to sonic_the_hedgehog) this week. (I prefer to avoid doing bigger tag moves on the weekend as the servers tend to be more busy)
Edit: Tag moved back to sonic_the_hedgehog
