"Paying the Price"

Transcript

Eric: Here. For the two of you.

Mike: Huh? W-what’s this?

Eric: Payment for services rendered. You two officially no longer belong to me. I filed your initial paperwork this morning, before all the… fireworks.

Eric: I’ve also confirmed the sale with Ms. Roselyn. So, presuming the filing office in the city hasn’t burned down, you’re now as free as I can make you.

Eric: I included some extra for saving what you could from the Na’Rella.

Mike: This…

Mike: …is for me?

Evals: Well… wow, uh… thanks, I guess. And… thanks for defending us on the docks, as well.

Evals: For what it’s worth, I’m sorry your ship went down like that.

Eric: It’s alright. It’s no small loss, but it’s certainly not going to affect me as much as it will for some from this attack.

SIGH

Eric: I am sorry as well, for putting the collar on you. I knew what those things did but I used them anyway, and I regret it. To be honest, this whole “vacation” has given me a lot to think about…

Eric: In any case, good luck to the two of you, whereever you’re headed from here.

  • Eric may be a pervert, but let it not be said that he does not pay is debts, nor that he does not amend his errors in whatever way he can.

I do wonder what his time to think will mean for Kathrin.

To be fair, he wasn't a cruel master by any means.

Yeah who could call someone willingly slowly lobotomizing his slaves cruel

Please note the qualifier "Whatever way he can." He was also under false impressions on the slavery of Keidrans that I am sure have been broken, his doubt in said impressions most likely the reason he never put Kaithrin in a collar.

He's also not exactly in a position to do much, and he also didn't really force the collars on them except when necessary from what I can tell (my memory is probably shoddy though)

Also I wouldn't call it 'lobotomizing' exactly. Lobotomy is pretty permanent and a bit more severe. It's more like minor brainwashing, thought that's not necessarily much better.

But to my point: Eric isn't necessarily a fool, but I'm pretty sure he's had some time to do serious thought on the practices he's been using. Also, if I may, a mere few coins is far more valuable to the pauper than the king. I'm pretty sure those couple of coins is a pretty good way to start making amends, and a few is probably more effective than many so they aren't overwhelmed or suspicious of him.

I do think this a major step forward for all three of them. Eric made them as free as he legally could manage to, on top of giving them earnings to find their own place in the world. Freedom and a solid foundation to build it on is probably the best thing he could do, and not just because of his current situation.

I mean, he even went so far as to admit to making a mistake in using the collar. That's pretty significantly further towards mending things than most people would be willing to go.

If you remember when he whined to his brother about why kat didn't wear one he stated it slowly destroys the wearer's personality and free-will altogether

Very well I will accede on my point on lobotomy, however I would still very much like to continue defending Eric and how much of a gentlemen he can be, pervert or no.
