TheDarkDragoness is right. Birdo is a gender-confused male. Yoshi knows this and Birdo is also Yoshis love interest. The whole female/ambiguous gender classification was only added to not offend sensitive Americans when it was ported. Personally, I couldn't care less. Its actually nice having an almost openly gay character in a popular series.

Yes, on the Japanese website for Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, under Birdo it says "Birdo looks like Yoshi's girlfriend, but is actually a boyfriend!?"

Here's something for you to think about, it it has been established that Yoshis and Birdos are two species in the mario universe so it's highly possible that the Yoshi and Birdo that we see Double Dash are two members of their individual species who are a homsexual couple

In Japanese games Birdo is male. NOA(which is only Nintendo's legal and commercial arm) freaked out and changed Birdo to being a girl in the English Localizations
