Born To Be Alive - 01
by borba

This is the long-awaited official continuation of I Will Survive. Enjoy!

I would like to thank all those who encouraged me to create this continuation, especially Megumisguy. The short novel created by him was my main inspiration to make Born To Be Alive. You can check out the fanfic by clicking here.

Creating this sequel wasn't an easy decision, as I explained in the last entry in my Deviantart journal. I Will Survive created an unnecessary controversy surrounding the issue of abortion and a great deal of shitposting in the comment areas. I said it was unnecessary because the comic was about a breakup and what caused it, with the abortion theme working just as the controversial matter that triggered the intense argument between Nick and Judy. Anyway, I hope the moods are calmer now and that this sequel won't be considered as controversial as IWS was.

Warning! All opinions are welcomed as long as kept within the civilized levels. Personal attacks and extensive postings on matters unrelated to this fan comic will be hidden and those responsible for them will be summarily blocked without any prior notice.

Zootopia and all related characters are © Disney.
This comic is © William Borba.

  • I wish I could feel interested in this but these days it's so hard to tell how much of what Borba says is straightforward and how much is trolling. He did, after all, announce two fake "sequels" with "Tundratown Thaw" and "See You Next Wednesday".

In the aftermath of IWS a lot of posters were rude, obnoxious and anything but civil in their comments. Borba certainly didn't deserve the incredible shade thrown his way.

But at the same time, when you read his journal entries he says how unfortunate it was that IWS got so embroiled in the "unnecessary controversy" over abortion when he just intended the story to be about two characters having a break up.

His resume lists that he's been a professional artist for over 15 years so with that much storytelling experience under his belt, he could have chosen from many, many issues over which to have a relationship break-up.

To intentionally choose an unwanted pregnancy and the implied option of abortion, then give the two characters recognizable pro-life and pro-choice attitudes, and then be surprised when the fandom blew up over it... well that just seems like he's either incredibly naive or was subtly trolling the audience and got taken off-guard by the intensity of the reaction.

Either way, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and see where it goes. But I'm not, at present, holding out much faith in his ability to tell a balanced, sensitive follow-up story.

I'm also hoping we can go the whole story without putting Judy in a tank-top and tight shorts like last time.

  • A continuation of "I Will Survive"...uhhh...I think Colonel Sandurz said it best in the movie Spaceballs: "Fasten all seatbelts, seal all entrances and exits, close all shops in the mall, cancel the three ring circus, secure all animals in the zoo!" because things are about to get ludicrous.

While the "attitudes" that Borba represented in the comic may be recognizable, they were presented as you'd see on an internet discussion forum, not as a couple who listens to each other and respects each other's beliefs and boundaries.

Agreed, the biggest criticism I have of the story Borba presented has nothing to do with the inclusion of abortion or the pro-life vs pro-choice positions presented within.

I found it a very poor story for the comic to actually assert that Nick and Judy shared, and I quote from the comic, an "everlasting love that has triumphed over the odds and many challenges", yet their actions and behavior toward each other over the 24 pages of the comic conveys no sense of compassion, understanding or willingness to compromise for the sake of their loved one.

Both Nick and Judy are portrayed as seeming to only care about themselves, ignoring the other's thoughts and feelings so they can focus on what's at stake for them.

It was as if they were trapped in a melodramatic, over-the-top episode of a badly written soap opera (or Telenovela since Borba's from Brazil) and I'm really hoping we don't see more of that style of story-telling in this sequel.

  • They could play it off as a heated argument (It actually happens.) Judy is scared, and her fear caused her to think irrationally, and Nick's passionate plea went a bit over board too.
