Mostly for flavor. She didn't actually turn small in the continuity, it was just a cute way to depict a sort of jump in the timeline. Where she goes from the door to her seat all the while just kind of being led there. Think anime, it's a thing that happens a lot there and in cartoons in general.

It's a pretty commonly used animation in a lot of anime, like someone else mentioned, used to denote a state of confusion, and some other kinds awkward moments. Watch enough anime and you'll get it. I personally recommend Log Horizon, which makes several uses of this animation.
