This is the first of three paintings depicting the 'Gueules Cassées', or veterans that returned from the First World War with horrific yet survivable facial injuries.Talented painters and sculptors constructed custom masks for these so called ‘mutilés’, such as that of Anna Coleman Ladd, allowing servicemen to regain a fragment of their lost identity. Despite this, however, many were unable to see beyond the uncanny figure beneath, as the painful true face of war had overridden the memory of the man.
All that meaningful stuff aside, this is the big project that I've been working on for some time for school! It's all done now and it's a big relief. As much as I enjoyed making more ambitious pieces, it was rather stressful under a time limit and to be marked. But as a collective, I'm really proud of what I've made.
This is the first in the series and the first that I made. It was really intimidating to start a large project like this that felt somewhat consequential. It was sort of uncomfortable at first, like my personal time for art was merging with school. But this one turned out nice which kinda reassured my confidence. I personally find it really interesting how my
style and general look of my paintings evolved across each piece.
But hey, I'm back for a short while, I tend to be more active on my instagram but I'm trying to fix that. I'll be catching up with everyone soon!

Quite good work! E621 isn't the best place to get traction for something quite so grand, but any traction helps. It's quite appealing, especially with the context provided. I'm also quite impressed by your precise use of watercolour! Keep it up!
