Two further problems: they can't regulate body temperature well outside of water, and the larger species especially have difficulty with their weight compressing their internal organs and lungs. Definitely not healthy. (I did more research than necessary for a merfolk story)

Fortunately, author says it's a fantasy setting, so all of this presumably goes out the window. :D
