I thought Spongebob was interesting the first few times I saw episodes. I'm not sure it's really a show for kids. The retarded humor and animation quirks seem aimed at a more mature audience. Like Ren & Stimpy, the Ripping Friends or other such weird shows.
I don't think there's a deeper meaning to the gags, but sometimes I wonder.
