What's happening here is a form of gaslighting, actually. There are a lot of ways of doing it, but ultimately it comes down to manipulating them through things like that. It got its name from a 1944 film where a husband manipulated his wife into thinking she was going crazy, obviously named Gaslight. I never actually watched it, though, so I don't know the particulars and don't want to go a-googling to find them.

I think it gets misused alot and ironically people use "gaslighting" to gaslight someone else.
