There's a theory (supported by Ed's own voice actor) that Ed is actually much smarter than he lets on and only plays dumb to get dismissed as a harmless fool.

Guess he also managed to fool Shenzi into believing he's not missing on purpose.

Do you suppose he figured out the best way to survive on the outskirts of the Pridelands at a young age was to act dumb so that others would think him unimportant and therefore not worth attention? For example, a jealous brother to the King of the Pridelands with delusions of grandeur and a twisted idea of what a good king should be?

Possibly. And, as an adult, that playing dumb would make others less likely to take him as a serious threat, making it easier for him to take foes by surprise.

I mean, Shenzi's the clan leader, but at the end of the movie, she lets Ed decide Scar's fate (and he manages to be genuinely unsettling at that moment), so she definitely has a great deal of trust in him. And considering how large her clan is, she certainly wouldn't keep an unhinged moron as one of her top lieutenants with better options available, so there's certainly more to him than meets the eyes.

I mean, he's a male hyena. That's how gender roles work for that species regardless.
