Assuming Ricard Senior is a very manly man, with old fashioned views, culinary arts and cooking is a woman's thing. It's unclear if Richard went to business school because he wanted to, or it's because that is what his dad expected of him.
Given page 10 of this chapter, there's a line that makes me suspect Richard Senior is a touch strict and possibly mean, but in that weird 'I show my love for you by being a total jerk.' method. The line in question, from Richard "It's not easy to work on anything if, as soon as I fail, you'll be there to criticize me!"
