As fewer and fewer people have contact with horses, the meanings of horsy metaphors tend to blur and become lost. It's REIN her in, not "reign." Ditto "Give her free REIN" and "the REINS of power." I see "reigns of power" a lot.

Another example: people sometimes write "chomping at the bits" (as in munching fragments, I guess) for "champing at the bit."
