Former StaffIn Japanese, it is possible to avoid saying words that suggest gender like he, she, him, or her.... it is a common thing to do with characters where they want the audience to wonder, or don't feel it's needed. However, in English, that's a lot harder to do without sounding awkward... THus, dubbing or subtitles may have references to a gender that might not be correct.
All that said, I just went looking again and wikipedia says that Mei does NOT have a gender mentioned in the books, however, Mei is apparently a male goat in the movie, and a female goat in the anime.
So, this picture is simultaneously right and wrong at the same time :) (and, so am I! But my last post was 3 years ago, so I think I can be forgiven :) )

MemberOkay, I feel I gotta clear things up. In the original novel Mei and Gabu were heavily implied to have been a couple even more so than the movie. Mei's gender was never specifically mentioned because the creator felt it wasn't necessary to mention at any point, and he felt that anyone could love anyone despite gender or species.
Years later when the movie was in the works, the creator of the novel came out and admitted Mei was always a male and always intended to be.
Then when the anime came into view, Mei was changed to female due to the fact that Mei was a very effeminate character already, and they felt it wasn't right having a gay couple as the main characters of a kids show.
So basically it's
Novel - Ambiguous gender (Later confirmed male)
Movie - Male
Anime - Female

MemberI think the romance was always meant to be a maybe, as in the audience can decide whether or not it has romantic intentions.
