Description
It had been five months since Matthias accidentally discovered his girlfriend's big secret, one he now had to carry with him. A lot had changed in the past few months, not just the summer having to make room for the falling leaves of autumn. She went to study Biomagic in another city, he went to study a trade as electrician. They didn't see each other as often as they had hoped to, but every now and then, during the weekends, she would come back home. They cherished those precious moments they could be together, and today was one of those weekends he had been looking forward to all week...
He walked up to the door of her parents, and rang the doorbell. He was eagerly awaiting to see his girlfriend, but to his surprise - and dismay - the door remained closed. He rang again, and this time he heard an impatient male voice on the other side:
"Yeah yeah, I'm already coming!"
It was distinctly not his girlfriend's voice. The door opened, but only slightly. Matt could identify the young wolf he could see through the opening.
"Hey Alex, is Katie home?" he asked him.
Alex sighed and opened the door further.
"Come in," he said with his head bowed down. "She's not in good form today..."
"Huh? What do you mean?" Matt looked puzzled at him.
"The Moon..."
"Oh, yeah, hehe, I forgot to check the phases," he awkwardly smiled. "Did she miss her window in the morning?"
"She did, so be warned when she comes down to see you."
Matt stepped into the house and closed the front door behind him, while Alex went upstairs. This would throw a wrench in their plans. They were supposed to go running outside, but in her current state, he had doubts if Katie would be able to show herself in public. He hadn't prepared for this scenario, and little time to think about alternatives. What were they supposed to do all monring now? He got all dressed up for it? What it all for no-
He was distracted by Katie coming down the stairs. To his surprise, she was also dressed up in her sporting gear: a violet sports bra and shorts, and her usual foot paw gloves. But most notably was a yellow belt she was wearing, from which hung... her head. Her curse was still active, having missed her chance to re-attach her head to her body this morning. And yet, Katie seemed determined to go for a run with him as usual, as if nothing was out of the ordinary.
"Morning, Matt," she said to him.
"Katie?" he replied. "You still wanna go? I thought you didn't want to show yourself like this in public."
"I don't... but, I've been training, and..." she grabbed her head from her belt, put it above her shoulders, and released both hands from her head, which kept floating in place, "... I have this under control now," she smiled.
"Wow! You've mastered self-telekinesis!"
"Well, sorta," she grabbed her head again, and carried it under her arm. "It still takes quite some effort to do it, so, I can't keep it up for long. But hopefully just enough to get to the forest trail."
"But the trail will be full of leaves!"
"So? What's your point?"
"Ummmm..."
"Hey, no one will see us there. And when we're there, I can use my Head Purse Belt so I have my hands free."
"How did you get such a belt? I don't think you can get it in the sports shop in town..."
"Bought it this summer when I stayed over at grandma's in Lindborg. Among a few other things for when I... you know..."
"End up like this? I get it. And how's Alex doing with his monthly change?"
"Well, he doesn't want to talk about it that much, but... last month he went on a date... as a girl."
"Oh, how dare he, ha! So how did it go?"
"It went very well at first, actually. He went out with Hunter's younger brother, Chad."
"Good thing it was not with Hunter himself. He would reject the most beautiful girl in the world if she's dressed in the wrong colour."
"Yeah, they had dinner, talked a lot to each other, and they went to his place. All went well, until..."
"... until the sun came up," Alex continued, coming down the stairs. "He didn't know it was me all along, and was horrified to see me after I turned back into a boy! Said I catfished him, that he wasn't gay. He was furious! I was lucky to escape! It was a disaster!"
"Well, you shouldn't have hidden your identity like that," Matt said. "That's asking for trouble."
"Yeah, but... before that, he was really nice to me. It felt like we actually bonded, you know... But I guess I just FAFO'd."
"Sorry, what?" Katie asked.
"'Frick Around and Find Out.'"
"Next time, try to be more open and honest about it," Matt said to Alex. "Maybe you'll find someone who's more open to it."
"That's easy for you to say. You two are together since sixth grade!"
"Yeah, but this whole headless thing was something I had to take in..."
"But you didn't leave me for it," Katie said. "You stayed. You tried to help me when I really needed it. That's when I knew... you were really the one."
She lifted her head to kiss Matt on the cheek, and he blushed.
"Aw, you're too kind!"
"I'll leave you two turtledoves alone," Alex said, as he went back upstairs. Katie looked again at Matt, holding her head at his eye level.
"Hey, can you hold my head for a minute?" she asked him.
"Ummm... sure, why?"
"I'd like to do a warm-up first, and I need my hands for that."
"Oh, OK."
She handed over her head to him. Matt was still a bit weirded out by this, still not being used to hold his girlfriend's disembodied head, while her body almost seemed to move independently. They both gazed at her body stretching her leg muscles. Even Katie hadn't seen her own body from this perspective that often, but she was very pleased with how her body looked top fit. After having properly warmed up, she took her head back, and let it float above her shoulders, such that it was barely visible she was missing her neck if you briefly gazed at her.
"Almost natural," she said. "shall we go then?"
"After you, sweetie," Matt replied, as he opened the door for her.
They started running through their neighbourhood. The few passerbys on the street didn't seem to notice Katie's missing neck, as she seemed to perfectly mimic the movements her head were supposed to make if she still had a neck. Matt, as a kangaroo, was hopping besides Katie, the way he prefered to "run". They were jogging through a few streets until they reached the forest at the edge of their neighbourhood. They entered the main path, and quickly turned into a narrower side trail, and stopped. Katie grabbed her head, and removed it from her shoulders.
"Pfew, made it. Need to save some energy for the way back," she said, as she strapped in her head onto her belt.
"You're sure no one will see us?" Matt was worried.
"This early on a Saturday morning? Nah... Let's go!"
The two of them ran on the winding forest trail. The leaves on the trees showed their beautiful autumn colours of red, yellow and brown, many of which had already fallen onto the ground. The golden rays of the November morning sun tried to reach them through the trees. Autumn, despite its short days and horrible weather, had something magical, Matt thought, though, he was getting a bit cold. He looked beside him, seeing his girlfriend's headless body running beside him, with a thick layer of neck and chest fluff he'd love to have right now. He was surprised how Katie still managed to avoid all roots and loose rocks on their path, even with her head being in such a compromised position. Her self-assurance in this state was remarkable. A few months earlier, she was only stumbling around in this state, but now, it was like it was second nature to her. He smiled. If she could adapt to this, then surely this wouldn't be a hold-up for their love...
When they returned back to Katie's place, coming back to rest again, Matt started to notice just how cold he had really been during this run, and was starting to shiver.
"You didn't dress warm enough?" Katie said, holding her head under her arm.
"Y-yeah, d-didn't think i-it was this c-c-cold," he stuttered.
"Good thing I just heated up some hot coco," an older feminine voice said. Another wolf stood before the two. She had a metal prosthetic where her neck was supposed to be.
"Mrs B-Bluemoon, that's very k-k-kind of y-y-you."
They walked into the living room and sat down on the couch. Matt immediately grabbed a blanket and covered himself with it. Mrs Bluemoon came with a tray with three cups of hot chocolate milk with whipped cream on top, and put the tray on the table.
"So, having a bad neck day?" she said to Katie, as she sat down on the couch.
"Yeah... things didn't go as planned, Mom," she said. "But I won't let it ruin my day. And Matt neither," she smiled to her boyfriend.
"Yeah, no problemo - oh, this coco is really good!" he said after he took a sip. He saw that Katie was looking at him funny. "What?"
"There's a bit of cream on the tip of your nose," she said.
"You mean here?" he stroke over his nose, and saw some cream sticking to his finger. "Is it gone now?"
"Yeah, it's gone, hehe," she chuckled. "But there's some on your lips as well."
"And you want to help me remove it?" he smiled.
"Of course, sweetie."
She lifted up her head, and pressed her lips against his. They kissed each other passionately, as Matt grabbed her head as well, and she let go of it herself. She just let herself carried away by him in the kiss. They just had to enjoy this moment together. When they were finally finished, he held her head further away from his face, so he could se her lovely smile in full.
"And, is it gone?" he asked her with a big grin on his face.
"Completely," she chuckled.
