Lots of people were getting confused over the terms. Like, in a bisexual picture, some people would go "why is this tagged as gay, clearly the men aren't gay since they're also having sex with that female", etc. I mean, the point of tagging stuff as "gay" was still in term of what's happening and not what sexual orientation the characters actually are, but I'm guessing the current tags are just made to be a bit less confusing in that regard.

There could also be the fact that if someone wants to see yuri, all they'd have do is use the tag "female/female" instead of getting results of both yuri and yaoi which they only wanted results for just the one.

All the times I've added 'gay' to my search, I never once saw anything that didn't include two men doing it.
