  • Necrodrone was not an artist involved in this picture--removed the tag. Only tag the artists, please, not the owners.

    1) A character's creator/owner, by my understanding, DOES get tagged as a matter of copyright.

    2) Necrodrone is also the name of the CHARACTER, not just the owner, thus the tag still applies.

    1) Your understanding is wrong

    • Copyright? The original series or company a character or game is owned by.

That means you don't tag it for INDIVIDUALS.

    2) Necrodrone is an artist tag. The character is necrodrone_(character).

If that IS true, then there are a few thousand images improperly tagged by including the ORIGINAL creator/artist as well as the artist who made the specific piece. Can you direct me to the rule that says the original artist/owner does not get properly credited simply because they are not a "series or company?"

I just did. Unless the tag is a copyright tag, don't use it as one.

The Necrodrone character was created by the person who uses Necrodrone as their "fursona." Necrodrone is their own intellectual property, ergo Necrodrone is copyrighted to the artist. Attempting to put an artist name AS a copyright tag (trying to turn a yellow tag into a purple one) results in an error message because e621's coding views that as attempting to force a tag out of its "default" category.

And this still doesn't address the fact that there are thousands of images on this site where the original CREATOR and/or commisioner is tagged right alongside the artist who worked on that particular piece.

Can we get an admin decision here?

Copyright tags are for franchise and series owners, like Nintendo. We do not tag character owners, only artists and character names. A copyright would only be added if the character depicted is owned by some kind of company.

So "intellectual property" copyright only warrants a tag for
big names like Nintendo or Marvel, but not for an individual's own original creation if depicted by someone else? If that's how it is then that's how it is. Just, in my own opinion, it doesn't seem right. But, with the "tag category" not allowing for the use of recognized artist tags as copyright tags, I suppose this is how it has to be in order to maintain consistency. Thanks for your time, Ratte. Just wanted to make sure I have the right information here.

You could propose changing necrodrone_(character) -> necrodrone_(necrodrone) to define the owner.

The problem with that, though, is the sheer logistics of it, as to truly make it workable and consistent across the board, every character tag (or at least all the OCs) would have to be changed to reflect their "non-corporate" copyright/ownership. While a great deal of images here revolve around mainstream characters and universes (Starfox Pokemon, My Little Pony, etc.) the number of standalone characters, webcomic cast members, etc. is far from insignificant, and I don't know if it's as simple a fix as flipping the proverbial switch behind the scenes to automaticlaly alter an existing tag (for example, the proposed Necrodrone_Character to Necrodrone_Necrodrone) and even if it was, it would have to be reprogrammed for every individual OC and makes tag searching all the more complicated as not everyone knows the original owner/creator of every OC out there.

I was simply under the impression that the matter of OC copyright was handled by tagging the OC's artist regardless of whether that artist actually worked on a specific piece depicting their character. Obviously I was in error. The system isn't "perfect," and honestly no system can be "perfect" because every individual has their own idea of how things should work according to their own perspectives. So, we get what we get and hope that it's good enough to get the job done.

If you think tagging a character by their owner is a bad idea, then the only thing left is the description. Add in something like "The character Necrodrone belongs to Necrodrone."

That would have much the same pros and cons as putting the copyright in the character tag, with the added con of not benefiting from the ability to blanket-edit the way tags can be handled. It is what it is.
