I'm not sure your reading Max right. Judy's sister pointed out that Max was in a Pred/Prey relationship before, it ended badly. The physical and mental comment probably implies both to his scars and his being heartbroken.

But it's highly implied Max still pines for his girl (calling out Judy's sister on her racist attitude, implying she might be jealous of Judy's relationship with Wilde, still carrying a predator's canine as jewelry)

Max is likely supportive of the idea from the get go. His personal foray with the relationship ended in disaster, but he's pleased to see Judy making it work with Nick.

There's also the question of why it ended badly, which hasn't been addressed. Might not actually have had anything to do with it being pred/prey, or maybe it was because of other people's prejudice, which would give him good reason to be angry at Judy's sister.
