The Nintendo Wii U is Nintendo's sixth game console, and the successor to the Wii, released in 2012 in most regions, and in 2013 in Brazil. After the smash success of the Wii, Nintendo decided to release a sequel console for the eighth generation of consoles.

The most distinguishable part of the console is the Wii U GamePad, a tablet-like controller which has all the controls, a big screen in the center of it, IR remote features, and more.

However, due to poor marketing of the system, it led most consumers to believe that the Wii U was just an add-on for the Wii instead of its own separate system. This, combined with several other factors (weak launch titles, underpowered hardware, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One releasing, rare third-party support), led to the Wii U becoming a commercial flop for Nintendo. With that being said, however, the Wii U did get some things right.

The NFC reader built into the gamepad were used with amiibo, a series of collectable figures used for various games. It also had a good library of (mostly first-party) titles, such as Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Super Mario 3D World, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, and Nintendo's first new IP since Pikmin, Splatoon. The Wii U sold around 13 million units worldwide and was discontinued in early 2017. It was then succeeded by the Nintendo Switch.
