Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a 1937 American animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Productions based on the German fairy tale 'Snow White' by the Brothers Grimm. It is the first full-length cel animated feature film and the earliest Disney animated feature film. The story is about a lonely princess whose vain stepmother, an evil queen, tries to get her killed after a magic mirror tells the queen that the princess has become "the fairest one of all" (i.e. most beautiful) the land over her. However, after the queen's huntsman refuses to do so and tells the princess about the queen's plans, the princess runs away and ends up in a small cottage in the woods accommodated by seven adult dwarfs.
The film was so ambitious for its time that many believed that it would ultimately fail and Walt Disney's studio would go bankrupt; the film was even derisively called "Disney's Folly" during production. However, it became a critical and box office smash, earning praise from audiences including many of Disney's naysayers. Disney received a unique Honorary Academy Award consisting of one full-size statuette and seven smaller ones, presented to him by then 10-year-old Shirley Temple. Snow White's success ensured the future of the animated film industry and Walt Disney Productions' film output, as well as the future growth of the media conglomerate that would eventually become The Walt Disney Company today.
