The surwasi occupy the middle-range, mid-sized islands of the archipelago, associating with freshwater areas like springs, lakes, and rivers. They are the smallest group on average, if just barely, and are known to have ascending (rising) jaw fins which are movable. Despite their otherwise dull coloration, the back plating is often a very bright orange-- though colors like pink/red, bright blue, yellow, and silvery-grey. Eyes are still some shade of grey or blue.
