A kobold is part of a race of short, draconic humanoids originating from the pen and paper role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons.
The kobolds of Dungeons & Dragons were inspired by the kobold sprites of German folklore who were dog-headed goblins that tormented coal miners. Which aside from inheriting their association with mining and sporting a small stature, the kobolds of D&D have little in common with the original mythology.
D&D kobolds have gone through different designs with each edition of Dungeons & Dragons, with the 3rd edition being their most well-known incarnation. The furry fandom itself has since then adopted different takes on the design of the kobold species.
