September 16 is Aniversario de la Independencia (Anniversary of Independence) or Mexico's Independence Day, when, in 1810, Roman Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo rang his church bell and gave the call to arms that touched off the Mexican Independence War against Spain. With Grito de Dolores (Cry of Dolores) on September 15, it is one of Mexico's five Fiestas Patrias (Patriotic Holidays).
