SCP-040-1 are various specimens from the mythos of the SCP Foundation website. Their debut story, SCP-040 — Evolution's Child, was posted in July 2008 by a writer known as Kain Pathos Crow and rewritten by Djoric in 2012.

SCP-040-1 are a collection of organisms genetically modified by SCP-040 using her abilities. They have no standard morphology as the specific organism from which an SCP-040-1 originates from varies, but will invariably be created from living matter and undergo behavior shifts including an unwavering loyalty to SCP-040, regardless of prior association.

Due to SCP-040's current capabilities, SCP-040-1 are usually made from multi-cellular animal life; there has been great difficulty in creating an SCP-040-1 with plant matter, and modification of micro organisms has yet to be achieved. Dead cellular tissue can be introduced to living tissue to provide more mass in SCP-040-1 creation, and can be a method used to reanimate corpses. After creation, SCP-040-1 have been unable to be further modified by SCP-040.

SCP-040-1 modifications are generally restricted to what is physically possible by known biology, despite the anomalous cause of their creation. These modifications are primarily cosmetic, as simple color and pattern changes are common, but sometimes more involved shifts in anatomical form and structure are performed. The creation of anatomical features only provide any function if they are adequately supported by the necessitated biological systems; for example, an SCP-040-1 could only fly if it either has wings of appropriate size and strength to provide lift, or, gas bladders that can generate lighter-than-air gases to provide buoyancy. Specialized organs formed in SCP-040-1 have an approximately two-in-three chance of failure upon their creation. Creation of minutiae has also been questionable despite SCP-040's efforts, as they become inversely unreliable with their size and increasingly inaccurate with their intended complexity.

By 2009, at least ten SCP-040-1 instances had been created and catalogued since SCP-040 was contained by the SCP Foundation. Three instances — SCP-040-1a, SCP-040-1c, and SCP-040-1j — have been authorized to stay in SCP-040's custody for her mental-well being; the remainder are to be disposed off unless otherwise reserved. A notable SCP-040-1 instance created during testing was an adult human corpse reanimated using three live brown rats (Rattus norvegicus). This SCP-040-1 had the mental capacity of a human toddler and no memories of their previous life.
