The DMC DeLorean, usually referred to by its pre-production designation, DMC-12, was a car built by the DeLorean Motor Company in 1981. It is a two-seater sports car with gull-wing doors, unpainted stainless steel body, and a rear-mounted engine that could go from 0 to 60 mph in 10.5 seconds. It is often referred to as "The DeLorean" because it was the only car made by DMC. The car was not popular in its day, owing to its ugly appearance, poor performance and frequent mechanical problems.
The car was featured as the time machine in the 1985 film, Back to the Future, and its subsequent franchise, cementing an otherwise forgettable car into popular culture for years to come. In the words of its inventor, "If you're going to turn a car into a time machine, why not do it with a little style?" Activating the time jump required accelerating to 88 MPH, a speed the real DeLorean would have struggled to achieve (the stock speedometer was pegged at 85 MPH).
