Arbor Day is a holiday celebrated in various countries on which people are encouraged to plant trees.
The first modern Arbor Day was held in 1805 in Villanueva de la Sierra, Spain in the tradition of arbor plantation festivals dating back to 1594. The first American Arbor Day was organized on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska when an estimated one million trees were planted in the state. In 1883, Birdsey Northrop of the American Forestry Association campaigned to make Arbor Day an overall nationwide holiday and then globalized the idea in 1895 upon a visit to Japan, the first of his international speeches on the day.
Arbor Day is held on the last Friday in April in the US. In other countries, it falls on different days, usually, but not always in the spring.
