semi-anthro

Semi-anthro describes characters with a form that lies somewhere between being feral, and being "fully" anthropomorphic — that is, having entirely humanoid proportions and features. This can apply to a wide range of character designs.
Semi-anthro characters almost always stand upright (although some may be able to run on all-fours), they usually have human-like hands (or use their paws as hands), and are capable of human-like expressions. However, they typically have more animalistic proportions and more animal features than a standard anthro character. Semi-anthro characters are often more squat than a fully anthro character, and frequently do not wear clothes,
Most funny animal cartoon characters will fall under this designation, as well as many Pokémon, Digimon, and upright My Little Pony characters.
Tagging note:
This is a supplementary tag used to indicate the grey area between anthro and feral, and is not intended to be a separate category. This means that depending on the image, tagging anthro or feral should be tagged in addition to semi-anthro, indicating which form the character is closer to.
Common semi-anthro features:
- Upright and bipedal
- Semi-anthro bodies can vary, but even the most "anthro-leaning" semi-anthro character will have proportions closer to that of their animal species than a human
- Semi-anthro characters' bodies will often be squat and bottom heavy, with digitgrade feet/legs
- Female characters may have wide hips and a narrow waist, they may also have a "puffed out" chest to resemble breasts (though some have actual breasts)
- Expressive faces that can emote in human ways despite otherwise animal anatomy
- More feral examples of semi-anthro characters may have mostly animalistic faces with human-like eyes
- Semi-anthro characters (in media and safe for work art) may go partially or entirely nude (with featureless nudity), with clothing usually limited to headwear, topwear, only accessories, or some combination of the three
- "Feral leaning" semi-anthro characters will display human level intelligence and capacity for speech while showing generally animal behaviour, while "anthro leaning" semi-anthro characters will possibly display some superficial animal behaviours
Note: Not to be confused with chibi or toony characters, though there may be crossover
