Overview
Team Magma is a villainous team in the Pokémon franchise that appears in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald in addition to their remakes Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and are in a rivalry with Team Aqua. They are based in Hoenn.
Hierarchy and Appearances
In all of their appearances, Team Magma is led by Maxie. In his original appearance (seen in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon), he is portrayed with styled red hair, a red/black overcoat with a zig-zag design and the team's logo emblazoned on it, and black dress pants and shoes. In his altered appearance (seen in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire), he is portrayed with a more elaborate red/black suit, with the team's logo emblazed on either side, a black undershirt, gold belt, red dress pants, striped leggings, and red boots. Notably, Maxie is also given a pair of glasses, which is also used to store a Key Stone for Mega Evolution.
The Team Magma grunts in their original appearance all wear short red hoodies with black 'ears' and black spots in the middle on their hoods, with the team's logo emblazoned on the chest, black gloves with red armbands, red legbands and gray dress shoes. Female grunts wear a gray dress with a red belt, while male grunts wear dress pants with a red belt. Female grunts also have purple hair that flows out of their hoods. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Team Magma grunts' uniforms have been altered to more closely match Maxie's own outfit, with striped leggings and shirts, red bottomwear, gold belts, and a small bag on their hips.
Team Magma has two admins, being Courtney and Tabitha. In their original appearances, both admins were barely different in appearance from other Team Magma grunts; the only changes being a longer skirt with a white bottom line for Courtney, with Tabitha gaining a red cape with a spiked end and two white stripes on his pants. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, their appearances were altered to be unique; Courtney gained purple hair and eyes with yellow 'ears' on her hood that more closely resemble bull or devil horns, an elaborate black and red dress with a twisty design, and red boots. Tabitha became notably more wide-framed, losing the hood to reveal black hair, wearing golden gloves, and a suit similar to Maxie's. Both admins also have the same striped shirts and leggings.
Story and Goals
In Pokémon Ruby, Team Magma's goal is to expand the world's landmass for the sake of both Pokémon and humans, and attempt to steal several items throughout the course of the game's story - The Devon Goods at Slateport City's Oceanic Museum, the Meteorite at Meteor Falls, and the Blue Orb at Mt. Pyre in order to erupt Mt. Chimney. After promptly being thwarted by the player character, Team Magma steals a the Submarine Explorer 1 from Slateport Harbour to travel to the Seafloor Cavern and awaken Groudon. The power of the Blue Orb enrages Groudon, who is later controlled by the player with the Red Orb at the Cave of Origin. Afterwards, Team Magma returns the Blue Orb and disbands, to never be seen again. In Pokémon Sapphire, Team Magma instead plays a supporting role, with Team Aqua performing the same actions to awaken Kyogre.
In Pokémon Emerald, Team Magma's actions are mostly the same, the only changes being a plot to steam rocket fuel from Mossdeep City's Space Center, and Groudon being awakened in their hideout inside Mt. Chimney. After their plan backfires, Groudon clashes with Kyogre (who was awakened by Team Aqua's plan). Both Maxie and Team Aqua's Archie realize the error of their ways and help the player quell the legendary Pokémon. Afterward, both parties make peace and disband.
In Pokémon Omega Ruby, Team Magma instead looks to have Groudon undergo Primal Reversion to expand the world's landmass and give humanity more space to grow civilization and jeopardize Pokémon co-existing with humans (referred to as Project AZOTH). Using the Red Orb, Team Magma awakens Groudon and forces it to go primal, drying up most of Hoenn. After the player quells Groudon, Maxie and Archie, witnessing the flow of emerald energy unleashed at the Cave of Origin, both agree to start over and amend their broken friendships with each other. During the post-game, Courtney attempts to still go forth with Project AZOTH, but is stopped by Maxie and the player. Unlike Ruby and Emerald, Team Magma do not disband at the end of the game's storyline, instead reforming as a humanitarian group for Hoenn.
Other
Maxie reappears (in his original design) in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon as part of Team Rainbow Rocket, formed by Giovanni. When encountered, it is revealed that he had been summoned from an alternate timeline where he had succeeded with his original plans, and intends to use Groudon to enact the same on Alola.
