I was always curious (and maybe a bit bothered) why the "Penis" tag is, well, the proper word for that piece of anatomy while the Vagina tag is relegated to slang word for it, "Pussy". I think these two should match, either slang word for slang word (Cock and Pussy) or proper word for proper word (Vagina and Penis).

Especially since we already have other well-stocked tags with the words Vagina in them.

Though it might just create extra tags for the same thing. We don't use scrotom for balls and we don't really use labia for pussy unless its plump.

I'll discuss the genitals separately, since they have different purposes and a completely different set of tags.

Note that I will be using "male" and "female" as general biological terms, and will be ignoring intersex. This is only to simplify discussion (and to avoid excessive use of quotes).

Male genitals (copulatory organ)

Penis

• Short
• Common in everyday language despite being the "non-slang" term for it
• Limited confusion (a glans is still considered a penis, a sheath is generally not [except for our own tagging])
• Works with most if not all penis-related tags
• penile_* tags have been gaining traction lately

Cock/dick

• More/less the same as penis
• Slang
• (cock) Has slight, but probably insignificant potential for confusion with roosters (cock would be aliased here anyways, so it's kind of a moot point)
• (dick) Is a name, but I doubt anyone would be confused by this

Male gonads

Balls

• Short
• Slang
• Generally works for most ball-related tags
• Complicated by castration and inside_balls
• Some tagging confusion with other kinds of balls (basketball, billiard balls, etc.)

Scrotum and testes/testicles

• Medical terms that, in common language, tend to be used interchangeably to refer to "the balls" (more testes/testicles than scrotum)
• Scrotum is the sac (analogous to "female" vulva) whereas testes/testicles are the actual gonads inside the scrotum
• You can have a scrotum without testes/testicles and you can have testes without balls
• Neither of these terms really help with reducing confusion with tagging over the shorter "balls"
• Complicated by castration and inside_balls

Female genitals

Pussy

• Short
• Slang
• Works to refer to the external and internal area (though we mostly tag external)
• Minor confusion with cats (pussy would be aliased to the main tag if it were changed anyways, so it's kind of a moot point)
• Minor confusion with wimp/pansy/feminine male (unlikely)
• pussy_penetration may work to replace vaginal_* (even if it's a bit awkward), but there's nothing to replace vaginal itself

Cunt

• Mostly the same as pussy
• Some people find it extremely derogatory
• That's pretty much all I have to say about this one :/

Vagina

• Refers informally to both the area as a whole, and the inside part of the hole itself wordplay intended
• Works well with the vaginal_* tags
• vaginal_juice and vaginal_ejaculation are a bit awkward sounding, but might work well enough

Vulva/labia

• Refers to the external area (which is what we usually focus on with tagging)
• Works with size tags (big_labia)
• cum_in_vulva, vulva_penetration, and a number of others don't work very well.

Other thoughts

• I have no idea how fellatio and cunnilingus managed to win over blowjob/licking_penis/penis_in_mouth and licking_pussy (or other equivelents). :(

Vulva and vagina are 2 different parts, vagina being the tube connecting the labia minora to the cervix uteri and the vulva being basically all the external bits and only going in as far as the labia minora. One is right next to the other.

cum_in_vagina would be more appropriate then cum_in_vulva since you can't exactly cum in something that is mostly/entirely external.

In this case, a vaginal ejaculation tag would be both awkward as well as incorrect: the ejaculate (fluid) is not exiting from the vagina.

I vote we keep the pussy tag, as naming individual parts of the genitalia would overcomplicate tagging, just as it would be if we named individual parts that comprise the penis: shaft, foreskin, glans and meatus.

(while we may tag uncut, we do not label as foreskin )

While I may know what you mean, following this line of thought would mean lumping both the penis and testes together, which we just do not do here as they can be exclusive from one another, so your argument will not work within the gender-spectrum of e621.

There was some kind of discussion about this about a year ago, but nothing really came out of it (hahah penis jokes) other than something along the lines of 'well some of us feel like a standardized set of tags would be nice and a definite improvement, but another set of us feel like it doesn't really matter because if it ain't broke etc. plus it's too much work to implement something that's been implemented already, and another group of us don't know what a vagina refers to in strict anatomical terms despite touting science and logic so that's bad and we don't like that' etc.

At this point, I'm not really even sure if standardizing these terms is gonna ever happen without ignoring some percentage of naysayers, because standardization usually implies some kind of concerted effort to form a consensus in an effort to improve something in some way

I expressed my reasoning for changing it, for matching purposes (proper and proper/slang and slang) not really "label all anatomy properly" purposes.

And no to the "cunt" idea, that word just...eugh

There's no need to get technical. More people will understand Vagina than Vulva, so i return my vote to Vagina.
