Topic: Tag Alias: english -> invalid_tag

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

Aliasing english -> invalid_tag.

Reason: Less than 1% of images tagged by it are not result of tagger typing "english text" instead of "english_text". Tag that suggest "it looks like english" need another name or it would be constantly rubbished with mistagging.

Same goes for german etc.

Not everyone searches english_text or german_text, tags like english and german come in handy.

If someone want to search for english_text without typing full name it's their problem not mine. I can agree though to alias it to english_text, but I don't want to tag system be broken like on other sites, where instead of single fim tag there are fim friendship_is_magic mlp_fim, and many other tags coexisting creating complete mess.

I agree that english should be aliased, but german, italian, french, ect should be kept as nationality tags since they tend to be tagged as such.

If we plan to keep german french ect then we should keep english

Maybe renaming would be a good option. Like x -> x_nationality. I'm not sure whether should it be done by aliasing though, cause it would probably cause in future many garbage to be thrown in x_nationality tags.

Why? We have british, which is a much less easily confused tag.

All english has been used for is english text.

What about japanese? It has at least one picture that isn't about text (post #167259) and japanese_text is only 10 times less used than english_text. Which is still impressive number considering that other languages are used 100 times less than japanese.

Japanese is a tricky one. On it's own it might warrant the creation of *_nationality tags, but either way some serious tag clean-up will be required. Regardless I think that it should be kept since there's no japanese equivalent of british and it's not that difficult to identify mistaggings.

British has the posh gentlemen british full of tally hos, and wot wot old bean.....I dont think many understand a lick of that.....besides have oyu ever thought its personal preference? Some people dont like reading about British money and sports and what not. So replacing British with english....would be bad >.>

English refers to people from England. British refers to people from Britain, which includes Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. If you call someone from England British, you're technically not wrong but they prefer to be called English. If you call someone from Ireland English, be prepared to get popped in the gob.

British is not now, nor has it ever, referred strictly to English styles, peoples, dialects, or themes, so using it in that manner is incorrect.

Guess you never heard of the terribly_british tag then.

Regardless, the english tag describes, and shows every indication that it will continue to describe, nothing inherently English or British beyond the language. Therefore it is redundant with the english_text tag. The only two solutions that I can see are:

Aliasing english -> invalid_tag
OR
Aliasing english -> english_text

Any opinions on which is better/alternative solutions?

I could see aliasing english to english_text. Other nationality tags should stay the same for reasons already mentioned.

You mean the tag that's not on that image?

That's another stupid tag that needs to go away.

The tag was on the image, just look the tag up it comes up on a lot of them. Also the tag isnt stupid nor does it need to go away.
