Topic: [Feature] Gender Tagging Requirement

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

Requested feature overview description.
- I would like to propose a rule that would require users who upload to this website to tag genders of characters in pictures. The page would not allow a user to upload a picture unless the tags male, female, ambiguous_gender, cuntboy, dickgirl, zero_pictured or intersex are in the tags field. (And when the final verdict comes back on the more PC replacements of cuntboy/dickgirl, those).

Why would it be useful?
- This would improve blacklist efficiency drastically for users who have blacklisted genders like me, and help educate new users about the policies and rules of E621.

What part(s) of the site page(s) are affected?

I believe JavaScript can check strings in a text form against a set list of words.
Before you jump to arms, this would not only be for me. It just happens to be a problem that plagues me as well.

You need zero_pictured in that set.

Currently undecided as to whether this would have the intended effect or instead increase mistagging.

Javascript can definitely do this; this idea is really no different than the blacklisting script in mechanism.

I do agree with you on the zero_pictured tag, so I'll go ahead and add that.

As to the mistagging, I don't believe it'll really make a difference. When people yell at new users for not adding genders, they tend to try and add the genders, regardless if it's correct or not. I feel as if there's a large-enough tagging crew of janitors, contributors and normal users like you and me who would see such mistakes and correct them, maybe even kindly message the user and explain to them how they made a mistake. I mean, after all, we're all in this together.

I suppose we could make the "Before uploading, read the how to upload guide." text more noticeable... maybe move it closer to the tag textbox.

JavaScript can also be used to disable the requirement.

Though honestly, would someone really want to go through the trouble of disabling their browser's JavaScript just so they can circumvent something that can help them become better taggers? If anything, this helps people who can tag like they should, janitors like yourself AND uneducated users who want to upload things to a website where everyone is anal-retentive (just like me) about tagging. I can only see positives from this feature. If people were to disable this feature, they're only hurting themselves.

This is likly to lead to more mistags, be aware some people dont tag genders for one because it can sometime get to hard to tell the gender that is especially so with cuntboys and certain species that are exempt from complying to human standards of sexual traits would be especially prone if this was incorporated.

And sorry Faux-Pa but i wouldnt be too sure about that people have made extentions for less useful proposes...

Might add extentions do already exist that disable certain scripts or all script processes all together

how many threads do we have active now devoted to the topic of gender? at least 5 i know.

I don't see this going over well.

agreed, a rule that could potentially drive people away from uploading is what it sounds like to me. especially when it comes to the dreaded intersex characters.

personally, i'd find it somewhat annoying to be forced to add certain tags when uploading or not be allowed to upload at all regardless of the tags in question.

Unless we have an uploading page that actively helps people with tagging the answer will be absolutely not.
All this change would accomplish is that people will be driven away from uploading because nobody is going to bother to learn the intricacies of tagging before they upload.

If someone couldn't even bother doing a little research about tagging genders properly, then maybe E621 isn't for them. Especially if that's a good enough reason for them to be driven away.

So why did you even bother adding the tagging guidelines to the upload page? People already learn about the intricacies of the uploading guidelines when people complain to them about their shitty tagging. This is just a more upfront and less personal way of doing so.

I'm going be a little honest, but constantly having to remind people how to tag is a reason for good taggers to leave. If someone can't even bother to learn a little about how to tag genders correctly on a website most known for porn, then what's the point of even trying to teach them on a person-to-person basis? By consistantly not adding gender tags, they're demonstrating that they just don't care, and trust me, being a person who didn't care, I think I can speak for the fact that it's pretty hard to get someone to care. This requirement should be one of those reasons.

Edit: And considering that some of the people who do attempt to tag come from Rule34.xxx, why would they want to adapt to a new tagging environment?

Don't get me wrong, I really do welcome new users to this website, but I'm not proposing this to hurt them. This trying to help them for all of us.

As long as people are tagging at least four valid, applicable tags, it really doesn't matter what those tags are. Reminding people to tag gender is your own issue, and not one we can really enforce. No rule is actually being broken.

Alright, I rest my case... even though I really didn't even have a good one...

Most things have already been said, but I'd just like to add that even the most experienced users sometimes need a second option for gender tagging. Same goes for pretty much any basic tag.

And although it would be nice if the uploaders tagged all the basics (plus common blacklist tags), it's in no way required. Users are encouraged to add the tags that they personally find useful, and if the gender tags aren't among those, then that's fine. Someone else will fill them in.
