Topic: Tag discussion: christmas

Posted under General

This is a discussion about the tag in relation to e621

This is not the place to discuss religion or politics unless it's DIRECTLY-RELATED to tagging/name policy

(if you can't decide if something is directly-related, then don't post it)

It's December of [current year] again,

What do you all think about the christmas TAG?

I was curious, and ran a search*1 for

christmas ~500 (504) posts
christmas ~religion ~jesus_christ ~cross: ~10 (7) posts
christmas -religion -jesus_christ -cross: ~500 (490) posts

So, if 95%+*2 of content for the christmas tag is non-religious, or has no major references to Christianity, why is it being tagged with christmas as the default name?
Some definitions: [source]
Christmas ‎(plural Christmases)

1. A festival, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ and incorporating various Christian, pre-Christian and secular customs, which is celebrated on December 25 in most places.

2. The Twelve Days of Christmas: Christmastide; the season (traditionally from the 24th of December to the 6th of January) around the holiday.

3. A personification of Christmas.

4. (marketing, retailing) The Christmas season, variously defined as the period from the Friday following Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve, or the end of the year period, when consumers shop and prepare for Christmas.

Notes:

*1. post results are within +/-10 post range, actual results are in brackets, relevant to the date of posting

*2 Percentage calculation

[(490 / 504) * 100] = 97.222222..%

490: {{christmas -religion -jesus_christ -cross}}
504: {{christmas}}

Simply place all the religious elements in the christianity tag and all the festive elements under the christmas tag. Only cross them over when elements of both are present.

Something like this sounds a step towards theme separation, yeah

Seems a bit strange to use a tag called christ-mas for scenes with no Christian imagery though

Danbooru has a merry_christmas tag for images that explicitly say "Merry Christmas" somewhere in the image. Should we go with that?

Sounds good!

Some kind of explicitly stated tag for such situations could be extended to other similar cases as well
(there were questions about this relating to the issue of tagging things in that were stated in the post, but not actually present, [links go here])

Then again, a lot of people who celebrate Christmas aren't christians. Maybe this is why some call it Xmas instead.

Happy holidays is considered a non-religious synonym for Merry Christmas despite its ambiguity so including it in the Merry Christmas's scope should be okay.

Yeah, actually, I was recently informed that according to Futurama, it's officially called Xmas in the future
if we heard it on Futurama, then it must be true!

Maybe we could do something with an xmas/christmas tag pair?
