Topic: Why is slyroon duplicating people posts and then flagging their original posts to get them deleted?

Posted under General

It's not cool, my post was originally uploaded 22 days ago, then it was flagged by slyroon for duplicate, i checked the post from slyroon and turns out it was uploaded 6 hours ago today and turns out slyroon was falsely flagging me, what is going on exactly, is he trolling or messing around.

My post that was uploaded 22 days ago and flagged by slyroon. post #754093

Slyroon post that was uploaded today and it's the same thing as mine, also i flagged him for duplicating my post. post #768776

Another post i uploaded yesterday, flagged by slyroon. post #768101

Slyroon post that is same as mine, i flagged him again for duplicate. post #768769

Updated by Mairo

The versions posted by slyroon are bigger. When a bigger version of a post is found it is uploaded and the smaller one is flagged. So don't worry, he's not trolling or messing around, he's just good at finding better versions.

Seriously man? I find my post bigger too, i found them on official artist sites like Tumblr or their own hosted webistes, and you tell me my post are smaller?, Nobody heard of "Resize Image" to make the image smaller for those with slow internet connection?

Larger versions are almost always preferred unless an image is mechanically resized larger as that makes the image quality suffer.

I want the proof of how much the size of the image i uploaded recently before they got removed by you. If you people are paying attention to the size of the image, please show the proof of my post image size, I am also paying attention to the uploader date, if he keeps him flagging all my post because of smaller "image", that will show how the furry community works. I have 400 posts remaining.

Not trying to be rude, but i wasn't expecting you people to pay attention about size of the image, i was expecting the upload date.

Sure.

Size of #754093 vs post #768776

Size of #768101 vs post #768769

As you can see, your posts were smaller than Slyroon's, thus they are deleted not for being a duplicate, but for being of inferior quality/size.

Images are flagged for quality regardless of post date. Post quality takes much higher priority than date.

But i have 400 posts remaining, you find them all smaller?, if yes, i download images by opening image in new tab and it will open at the large size depending on the artwork size by artist, so tell me this, how is slyroon getting large size of the image?

Because Slyroon is getting images from DeviantART and Hentai-Foundry instead of Tumblr. Tumblr forces resizing to 1280x1280 if the image is originally larger than that size. Similarly, images used to answer Tumblr questions are force-resized to 500x500 if originally larger. This is just a mechanic of that site.

What if the artist had tumblr account and never used deviantart or other community websites to publish their artworks with any size and file size? Also, I find people doesn't have tumblr on their URL, but their website looks like Tumblr if you used archive on the url.

Then use what's available, just as Slyroon is. If need be, use a reverse image search to try to find the best possible size for upload. Tumblr is not the best place for posting or sourcing given their forced size constraints.

FurAffinity's size constraints are laughably easy to circumvent when posting. I do it all the time. Their posting page even tells you how to do it.

Regardless, sites without forced size constraints (or at least ones not so small like FA and Tumblr) are usually the best for sourcing.

Can i keep my posts alive even if they are from FA or Tumblr or other sites that force size constraints? They are uploaded yesterday or past. Expect the today post i uploaded which comes from DeviantArt and Derpibooru.

Updated by anonymous

There are approved too, either bigger or smaller, i still wanna keep them alive, and not continue to upload post sourced from FA and Tumblr.

We only keep the best version around. If you upload the best version your image will stick around, if someone else uploads a better version your (then) worse version will be deleted.

As far as deviantart goes, use the download link (just below "Add to Favorites") to open full-size version rather than saving the one on the main page. The main page one is almost always smaller than what was actually uploaded.

Every day, I find two or three preview versions from Inkbunny on e621.
I guess "max. preview" is a misleading name for "full version".

Updated by anonymous

I do it because it benefits E621. If e621 have the best images around. people are gonna use this site, over some of those half-assed copies of e621. Look at it like this wouldn't you like to view the best version of your favorite images. do you wanna see images full of compression artifacts, blurry lines etc.

It is handy for finding other artist accounts though.

The situation is a lot of people take pride in what they find and upload. It gives us ownership in the community.

Slyroon uploaded larger versions of two pictures I had found which resulted in the originals not only being deleted, but the comments as well. Now Slyroon gets all the credit for what I originally discovered and posted for the e621 community.

I'm not going to take my ball and go home, but I see no further need to do the work of finding good pics, uploading and tagging them.

You do know that almost no one actually pays much attention to who uploaded what right? Some of my stuff got replaced early on because I uploaded the smaller versions - it taught me to be sure I'm grabbing the best version available.

I don't see the point of getting mad that someone liked what you uploaded enough to go and see if there was an even better copy of it to grab and share.

Well tbh, the original artist of an upload is actually who should be given the "ownership" in the community. The only reason I can see people being mad at someone uploading an art bigger than theirs is if it belonged to the artist. Other than that, submitting posts to e621 is like a bonus/helpful community service for the website. If you're just uploading to gain "ownership" or some kind of status, it's kind of bad...and little bit pointless. (Not trying to tick you off here)

But seeing you do take pride in what you find and upload, do not take my regards offensively. I'm not saying you should stop, but I am saying you shouldn't even care about this situation. In the end, you're both working to help this website. If there's one thing you should take pride in uploading, it should be submits made by you.

Internet points are useless. Even then, I doubt uploads count as internet points.
You gain absolutely no benefit by uploading something. The whole point of tagging people as uploader(In the database, not actual tags) is so that it can be traced back to whom upload it so mods can carry out disciplinary action should it be not allowed on the site.
Also so people can blacklist those who only upload "thats not my fetish", but there are more efficient ways of doing so.

Besides, I think a 4096x4096 lossless PNG is way better than a 128x128 lossy 10% quality jpeg. If I ever uploaded† something in a small resolution that I thought was the only copy that existed, only to find it to be replaced, I'd be glad because I'd be able to improve my personal collection with the higher resolution version.

HAHAHA LIKE THATS EVER GOING TO HAPPEN. It's not that I don't want to, I'm just too lazy. Plus if I did someone probably already beat me to it.

One thing that I will admit annoys me is when I upload an image after checking for a higher quality image at other locations that the artist posts and finding nothing, only to have the artist upload a higher quality version later.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm happy to have a higher quality version. That's not what annoys me. It just annoys me that I can't trust uploading an image from some artists, because there's maybe a 50-50 shot that they'll release a better version later.

It is smaller and i believe there is no such thing as bigger size of this post unless the artist has other accounts on other sites that may not limit the pixel size of his arts on these drawing community like DeviantArt.

Images which have gone through manual resize to a larger size than the original usually have poor quality. Plus, given that the images were properly sourced by Slyroon (and thus you can see exactly where the images are coming from, complete with image dimensions listed on their respective source pages) this accusation falls completely flat.

Don't go flinging baseless accusations over a couple post deletions.

Perhaps I'd best not bother asking why it's almost been two days for approval of a picture when I'm sure someone will just upload a bigger sized one, right?

anyways if you do not believe that its possible that there are bigger versions of the images:

im an artist and usually i resize images smaller while uploading them to furaffinity to avoid the image quality reduction.

heres a furaffinity link of my drawing. as you can see, the size is 1280x960.

here is the same image but on tumblr. i didnt scale it down but still it's size reduced because tumblr scales down larger images automatically. its also 1280x960

here is the exact same drawing but in full size. it's size is 1600×1200 because deviantart does not have image size restrictions.

if you were to upload this drawing, you would have to upload the one from deviantart in order to avoid it to get deleted because someone uploaded larger version.

As said, the image reduction is easy to circumvent on FA. Right after posting you can go to "Change submission file" under the image and just pick the same file as you posted. It will recache the image, including the small view and thumbnail, while then allowing the full size to be the true full image size. I do this quite often. It says how to attempt this on the submit page since so many people did it anyway.

Updated by anonymous

You can't take it personally when your image gets deleted in favor of a superior version. A lot of it stems from the fact that some sites have a size limit on the image they host. Like you'll find a downscaled version on Tumblr and think its great resolution, but then the original version will show up somewhere else in 4k resolution. It's just the nature of the beast.

That isn't to say that upscaling spite hasn't occurred here, but the mods are quite good at spotting them and the community generally points them out when they happen as well.

No one likes having their posts deleted, but it's all about maintaining the best quality possible in a single archive so sometimes things have to be deleted in favor of superior versions.

It's because of their shitty servers that you can't upload past that resolution initially, and because of it'd require more "coding" for the staff to "fix". And yet, it's not against the rules, but it's still a royal PITA.

I have enough personal experience with the FA staff to be well aware of this, yes. At least they're open about the workaround. Many other places would probably slap you for attempting.

It seems like it would be a simple thing to fix, they just need to reuse whatever code is used to verify upload size on submission on the re-upload page. It's possible that they run from separate software, but moving it over shouldn't be much of an issue.

My guess is they probably lost one or more major coders for several parts of the site and opted to work on a rewrite instead with the new help (or the ones they have are sick of patching ~10 year old code). It would explain why they might chose to ignore it (in the grand scheme of things, it's a pretty minor issue).

Disclaimer: I have no actual knowledge of their code or who works on it, I'm just speculating here.

I understand and agree completely, especially when it's deleted because it's a jpg and the one newly submitted is PNG. That shouldn't be a justifiable reason for calling a post inferior. Why does the size of the file matter if the quality and size of the actual images are exactly the same?

T.T Oh, I see. Well, I meant more that if you can't actually tell the difference by looking at it. If there is a clear difference to the naked eye, that's a good reason to delete it. What's the point of taking up more space if it isn't going to appear different to viewers?

It's not just appearance of the image. The quality of the image becomes important if you do anything with it beyond just looking at it: printing it out, digital editing/manipulation, resizing for personal use, etc.

Frankly... there are times when PNG is better and times when JPG is better. Unfortunately, there is still plenty of debate about where the lines are when it comes to choosing, even among those well versed on the topic.

Here on e621 (from what I've seen/read), because PNG is a lossless compression format it's generally accepted as the "better quality" upload regardless of other factors so long as it's also at highest resolution available. It's just easier for moderating purposes to have a single definitive answer rather than judgement calling every instance.

PNG is always better from a pure quality standpoint and as long as used space on the drive isn't an issue.
JPG's only redeeming feature is that it's smaller and that it handles photographs better because the compression algorithm is optimized to work with the natural noise digital cameras produce.

However, that's only for our server since other lossless formats aren't accepted by the server.

On a side not here I would like to point out:

File Size is listed as 486.8kb for the top version, the image source is exactly the same as the original post and the resolution is the same. However the original post is 294.5kb. When you go to the source link and download it from the source it is the 294.5kb version. Additionally this post is not a PNG vs. JPEG, downloading 790770 from e621 nets me a JPEG image.

So I would really be curious to know how the file nearly doubled in size yet the cited source does not lead to that image at all.
