Reason: Uploaded a picture by the artist which has nothing to do with the Moomins, but I cannot remove the Moomins tag without also removing the artist's.

e6 tags do not work like that. There's no "artist:snufkin" and no "character:snufkin" either, it's just "snufkin" which can be either a character tag or an artist tag.
Artist called "Snufkin" should be tagged snufkin_(artist). Post updated.

Does that mean that all instances of an artist being merely refered to as "snufkin" would have to be edited manually? Or does Tag Alias: artist:snufkin -> snufkin_(artist) still work?

Alias won't work. Tagging a post artist:snufkin will change the type of "snufkin" tag to artist, and then apply implications for "snufkin". This will of course wreak all posts with character Snufkin in them.
