Topic: Tag exchange (implicaton -> alias): sea_turtle -> marine_turtle

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

Exchanging:

implication: sea_turtlemarine_turtle

alias: sea_turtlemarine_turtle

Reason:

Synonyms. Despite of "sea_turtle" be the most ususual term, "marine_turtle" currently implies "turtle".

Related implications:

¹ Like the pinnipeds (which currently imply "marine"), marine turtles are able to walk on land, but are most closely connected with the ocean.

Edit:

After a brief discussion has been decided that the following suggestions would be more appropriate:

Exchanging:

implication: sea_turtlemarine_turtle

alias: marine_turtlesea_turtle

Resulting changes:

Implication: marine_turtleturtle

Implication: sea_turtleturtle

Marine turtle is just another less-common name for sea turtle. Alias should look like this:

marine_turtle -> sea_turtle

We shouldn't use a less common name simply because it has a implication attached to it. Just remove the implication and stick it on the better name.

OK then.

Sea turtles have flippers. Whereas the marine_turtle tag is for any aquatic turtle.

That's explained in the original thread, but nobody ever added it to the wiki...

This is really strange since:

I) "marine" fundamentally means "from the sea"; It is derived from the latin word "mare" (which means sea).¹

II) I actually did some search before suggesting and confirmed that "marine turtle" and "sea turtle" are synonymous terms.

¹ By the same reason, our current use of the "marine" tag instead of the "aquatic" one is inacurate (Note: I know it was your suggestion, however I am not sure if this information is relevant or not for the discussion).

p.s. I have knowledge about the differences between the distinct kinds of chelonians.
