Topic: What makes you sad?

Share your feelings here. You guys know the drill by now. I'll start.

When I see the ending to Pokemon: Lucario and the mystery of Mew. Don't care what you say. That shit made me cry.

Does Maleficent count? She's technically just an evil Faerie who can transform into a dragon.
And what about if it's dragon versus dragon? Are you happier that a dragon survived than you are sad that one died?

I was sad when Maleficent died. I'm a strange muddafucka.

And if it's two dragons, I got no problem. As long as it's not a hyooman doing the foul deed, it's fine. XD

Sounds to me like you've got more of an issue with a human winning than a dragon losing.

right offhand? nothing really comes to mind though there was that one episode of one piece where they gave their first ship a viking funeral. still probably one of the saddest moments i've ever seen in a anime.

Well, don't play Kingdom Hearts 1, Chain of Memories, or Birth By Sleep (Aqua) if you aren't ready for sadness.

I personally have trouble pinning down the meaning of sadness, so the closest I can think of is grief/depression. A majority of that comes from learning about spoilers for something I loved. May seem strange to some, but learning these types of things REALLY gets to me.

I get way too wrapped up in the stories/worlds/characters of the games/anime/manga/movies that i watch, read and play. (even hentai) Which is also part of the reason why i'm very much not a fan of the sad or tragic. (tragedy) From not only a conceptual and fundamental perspective. But also a personal emotional level as well. I just don't see the point. (escapism and such)

Now that's not to say that i'm against all cases of it or totally against 'dark' stories. But it really has to explicitly fit the narrative, the mood and atmosphere of the work.

What i hate is pointless a/o out of nowhere 'sad' for the sake of being sad. Though what I really, truly loathe is senseless last minute attempts at a seemingly deep (forced emotional) narrative. Sometimes in the form of a twist that manages upend and undercut everything the series was building. (mood, feel and story wise) Or what I like to call: 'Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.' That kind of bullshit just kills it. Usually enough to leave a really bad taste in my mouth and pretty much ruin whole series for me. Gurren Lagann being the epitome of such.

I can sympathize greatly to that due to how most of my social interactions seem to go.

Edit: And it's even worse when they do it intentionally.

When family members assume "I'm having some trouble, but I'm going to keep trying." translates to "This is impossible! I give up!"

When those same people decide that "You have no choice!" is the right thing to say to someone who was rendered incapable of emotion for two years the last time he "had no choice".

Clingy "friends" who are on a rebound.

Makes me sad and angry at the same time. Sad for their loss, and angry because they won't take "no" for an answer.

Yes, that makes me sad too. Journalistic integrity has never been stellar, but there was a time when it wasn't nearly as bad as it is now.

And actual liberalism... I honestly don't think most self-proclaimed liberals even know what the word "liberalism" means anymore.

The word "liberal" has basically been reduced (incorrectly) to a synonym for "left". Part of this is due to the left basically declaring it Their Word And No One Else's, part of it is due to the right being so amazingly stupid as to not only let them get away with that conflation, but help it along by making "liberal" a bad word in politically-right circles.

As for journalism, jumping Jesus on a pogo stick have things gotten bad. Journalistic ethics are an endangered species at this point, and journalists in general seem happy to reduce themselves to political hackery. That, and some (formerly) highly-respected journalistic outlets apparently live by the motto "It's better to do something and just apologize for it later rather than ask yourself if it's something that should even be done in the first place".

My condolences.

Sincerely, I have problems to understand why death makes people so sad. I had lots of pets during my life and various died (age, illnes, snake bites, accidents etc), also some close persons passed away, like my uncle, my best friend, my grandfather etc; and I never become sad for more than one day when someone dies.

It's called grief. They're sad because they've lost something dear to them and they can't get it back.

But death is ever a possibility, don't matter how safe someone could be, exist incontable ways to die; if something is alive, death isn't exactly unexpected.
As I said, already lost dear persons and I am not a necromancer, consequently, I can't get them back; I have some lack of empathy, but I am not made of stone, if that is so significant I expected to feel something significant instead of become a little sad for some hours.

Most people try not to think about death when trying to live their life. They know it's possible and inevitable, but thinking that too much can lead to overprotection, paranoia and fear#. Because death is not on most people's minds all the time, the death of a loved one is more surprising and has more impact on them than someone who sees it a lot and has to think about it.

You'll also notice this only happens when an emotional connection is established. You can watch thousands of strangers die and feel nothing but when your mother dies, nothing holds the tears back (unless your mother was a tyrant or something). Of course, some are more susceptible to their emotions than others. Some cry, some don't.

#This is why cotton wool parents exist. They're so afraid of their children getting hurt or killed that they try to protect them from everything and end up raising children who can't deal with danger of any kind because they've never been given a chance to learn how to.

Everyone reacts to that inevitability differently. Knowing something will happen is much different than the event actually happening.

As for why, scientifically, death makes people sad, it's a survival skill that aided in the continuation of a species that felt it. If you feel sad when someone dies, you're more likely to try and prevent it. One side effect was feeling sad for deaths that cannot be prevented.
