I think that cases of alias involving synecdoche, such this one, should be analyzed more carefully. "q-tip" is a more popular and shorter term, so might be better do the reverse alias.

Just gotta say, for Australia, I have *never* heard anyone say Q-Tip. I'm for Cotton_Swab, myself.
I don't blame ye. Us aussies tend to say "cotton bud" and I don't think the Q-Tips brand is sold here.

+1 for alias
'Q-Tip' is a brand name that is commonly used as a blanket term for cotton swabs in North America, just like 'Xerox' for photocopies, et.al.

Should we lodge another alias request for cotton_bud > cotton_swab? :D
I doubt it would ever get accepted due to low usage.

Nope. There has been a multitude of studies that show that removing ear wax (especially with swabs) is usually unecessary and more likely to cause more harm than good.
They're great for makeup though.

Hardly anyone outside of America has heard of q-tips, and it's usually best to avoid brand names in general tags.
By the way, if the Wikipedia is to be believed, those used to be called Baby Gays. I can see why they renamed it.

I'd also recommend aliasing cotton_bud → cotton_swab since the wiki entry directly refers to the alternate name.

I decided to just tag them all, since this hasn't been touched in 3 months. Now all posts that are tagged q-tip are also tagged cotton_swab, and vice versa. It will not have effect on future posts, though.
