Holy shit, another user that views samples!

The missing_sample tag is used to identify these until something is done to fix them. There are currently over 440 tagged and the majority of these were tagged by me.

Sample use is uncommon? I'm surprised. I find the consistent load times and memory use much more usable, but then again I'm a tab junkie with old hardware.

Anyway, nice work on that! Should be super helpful with diagnosis.

It's likely because people have "Dynamically resize images" selected and don't care about memory usage all that much. I mostly use samples because I have a shithouse internet connection and would rather not waste 2-63MB of it on a single png.

I'm not going to bother loading all 63MB of post #87405 no matter how good it is.

I guess the main issue is the resolution of the sample. 800px is pretty low resolution in 2017, because of this it's pretty much only justifyable if you are using mobile, old hardware or metered connection.

Even then some phones already have 1440p and 4K displays, so image clarity is still much better when viewing full images, so it makes much more sense to watch those on phone you paid hundreds for.

Also I personally have fast connection and 16 gigs of RAM.

I have resizing enabled, even on a fast unlimited connection. The loss of clarity is not that important, lots of images I like are just too small for my screen and get upscaled anyway. Consistency is, somehow, unexpected mega_absurd_res images are really annoying.

However, if resizing fails on some posts and I get full-res instead, I don't think I even notice that.

I use reduced samples.

1. We should reset every user's settings to use reduced samples and see if they notice.

2. Static GIFs are not resized by the setting, even though you would expect them to. But post #86806 is a JPG. Maybe it is an incorrect file extension or the sample never got created by the server.
