Topic: Tag Alias: kigu -> kigurumi

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

+1. I noticed that the other day too and thought it was weird. I actually don't even know why people bother saying it in Japanese to begin with. It's not like it's a concept we didn't have until we saw it from there.

I was about submit BUR of kigurumi -> kigurumi_(disambiguation)
but decided to get feedback the issue(s) and text below.

e621's kigurumi wiki starts with:
"Kigurumi is the Japanese name for costumed performers who represent cartoon characters, often animals. ..."
and also says:
"See also
kigurumin, animal-style pajamas worn in Japanese street fashion"

The main problem is the e621 posts tagged as kigurumi are mostly of the animal-style pajamas.

(putting specific examples in reply to avoid cluttering this post)

Looked at https://www.furaffinity.net/search/?q=kigu
and the first 336 results (apparently sorted by relevancy)
were all of the animal-style pajamas.
(FA search "kigu found in 11207 submissions.")

forwards to
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kigurumi

Only one other wikipedia article mentions "kigurumin", which is
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyaru ("a Japanese fashion subculture")
which says "キグルミン (Kigurumin): Kigurumin is a micro style of gyaru or rather it is derived from the manba substyle. These gyaru wear the kigurumi outfits as apparel or the mascot apparel of Japan but still apply and wear the same makeup and have tanned skin as the participants of manba. The name could also be seen as 着ぐるみギャル (ki-gurumi gyaru)."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kigurumi says (my additions are in brackets or doing strikethroughs)
"Kigurumi may refer to:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Costumed_performer#In_Japan
says "The Japanese name for costumed performers is kigurumi (着ぐるみ). ... These mascots are often constructed with an appearance that is more chibi than Western mascots, with a massive head ..."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onesie_(jumpsuit)#Kigurumi
says "A type of onesie known as kigurumi (着ぐるみ), or "cosplay pajamas", emerged as Japanese street fashion and spread outside Japan in 2009 ...."

I suggest kigurumi should be split into:
1) kigurumi_(clothing), or similar tag
2) kigurumi_(performer), or similar tag.
3) with kigurumin tag re-purposed for the above-mentioned micro-style of Gyaru (probably rare in furry art).

(list of examples in progress)

Example upload to re-tag as kigurumi_(performer) (or whatever alternative tag preferred):

post #3249610 tagged with kigurumi, but doesn't look like either kigurumi to me.
Artist's pixiv says "gardevoir latex suit" ... re-tag as latex_suit? (which currently redirects to rubber_suit)(artist pixiv source also has tags "beast body suit" and "Pokémon suit")

post #2923662 seems similar with artist's pixiv tags including "beast body suit" and "Pokémon suit" (tagged at e621 with rubber_suit)

post #147144 and post #76359 tagged with kigurumi,
but don't see a onesie kigu nor a performer/mascot kigurumi.
Seems to be mostly Animegao kigurumi (masked cosplayers)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animegao_kigurumi

(Couldn't figure out why post #2982638 was tagged with kigurumi, turns out they were wearing onesie kigus earlier in sequence. No kigu in 2982638, so removed that tag)

Updated

So, any thoughts on above suggestion of splitting kigurumi into:
1) kigurumi_(clothing), or similar tag
2) kigurumi_(performer), or similar tag.

*
Notes from earlier in thread:
A) "Only one other wikipedia article mentions "kigurumin", ..." ... including "...Kigurumin is a micro style of gyaru..."
and
B) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onesie_(jumpsuit)#Kigurumi
says "A type of onesie known as kigurumi (着ぐるみ), or "cosplay pajamas", ..."

The bulk update request #4239 is pending approval.

remove implication kigurumi (891) -> onesie (2904)

Reason: step 1 in BUR path (to getting to kigurumi -> kigurumi_(disambiguation))

See above posts in thread for why.

***

step 2:
alias kigurumi -> kigurumi_(disambiguation)
category kigurumi_(disambiguation) -> invalid

and IMPLY kigurumi_(clothing) * -> onesie
* = or whatever tag we decide to use for the onesie kigurumi.

Updated

Split into
1) kigurumi_(clothing) or similar tag:
For https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onesie_(jumpsuit)#Kigurumi
Anyone object to tag of kigurumi_(clothing) ??
(if you object, please suggest alternate tag)

2) kigurumi_(performer) or similar tag:
For https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Costumed_performer#In_Japan
Anyone object to tag of kigurumi_(performer) ??
(if you object, please suggest alternate tag)

and
3) animegao_kigurumi : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animegao_kigurumi

edit: oh, and in 2016 user rohto changed a bunch of posts
FROM tag kigurumi_marmo
TO tag kurono_rokurou.

(for details: go to https://e621.net/post_versions
and put kigurumi_marmo into "Removed Tags" field.)

*
edit: looked through Wayback (archive.org) archives of kigurumi_marmo pages (pixiv & FA), and don't see any indication they used a kigurumi* artist name. Discussion at post #906600 ended with conclusion-or-theory it may have been the name of a "circle" (circle of artists?). (discussion includes link to myreadingmanga which says "Circle/ artist: Kigurumi Marmot (Kakinoha)")

Updated

Is there any need for a kigurumi_(performer) tag? "Kigurumi" outside of Japan has taken on a specific definition the same way "otaku" has.

I went through every single post under kigurumi and couldn't find a single "costumed performer" outside of those two grandfathered photos from 13 years ago (if you consider what they're doing as "performing"). Every other post features a character wearing an animal-themed onesie — with the exceptions of a character named "Kigufox" mistagged as "Kigurumi", and a single user mistagging a rubber suit as kigurumi.

Uploaders and taggers are pretty much unanimous on what "kigurumi" should mean on e621, the wiki page is what's actually out of step with the tag and what should be changed. There doesn't seem to be any purpose in maintaining the current wiki definition, or making a new tag for "kigurumi performers" or disambiguating kigurumi as kigurumi_(clothing), we already have fursuit, costume, mascot etc. as tags, and we could have a animegao_costume tag, if we really need a specific tag for those anime cosplayer costumes, but that will likely only apply to those two obscure, old posts.
