Ever heard of Werebears?
and I'm not talking about the fantasy fictional creature

But a old 80's-90's toy plus doll,
that seems to be a boys version of the Care Bears.

http://www.werebears.com/the-story
http://www.werebears.com/fun-stuff-comics
https://youtu.be/orU5mpppzh4 toy commercials and etc

It seems it never took off?
or at least gotten more popular.
I kinda miss Monsters in my Pocket.
and no it isn't a pokemon clone
or a naughty euphemism.

it's nice that some people are willing to upload a comic like that. and i noticed it says "issue 2 coming soon". i assume we could expect to see more issues added there over time.

there's actually a comic series i've always wanted to see/read but no matter how much i looked off and on over the years, it never came up. i'm talking about the comic series the Chakan the Forever Man video games were based on. :/ maybe i just don't know a good site/source for reading such comics online.

guess i could always buy them >.> at $10 each i'm certain that series would be well worth the money. 21 books and counting...

well, guess i can spend some on that when i can afford it. it'd be cheaper than video games, that's for sure.

That first ad would not be permissible today.
A boy scares a girl with his teddy bear.
The girl has braids and a doll with braids.
Stereotypes! Misogyny! Toxic Masculinity!

Second ad:
"Something's happened in WerebearLand, an evil witch's got out of hand"
More misogyny!

Also, no People of Pigmentation in these clips.

It was the 80's and 90's very silly times
some of it didn't age well, but aged well enough
it's so bad, we play it for laughs today.

I like the toy idea but yeah I hate the stereotypical cliche boy and girls thing.

I don't know if they are gonna post more comics i hope they do.
as it seems like those werebear comics are super rare and theres like 8? issues.

Chakan the Forever Man ? I remeber that game but never own it
it did looked cool, kinda reminds me of Shadow Man.
and yeah finding old comics are hard to find
harder if it was a obscure, under-rated, or just forgotten comic.

The most obscure and retro thing I can remember was the TRS-80 (Trash-80 as it was known) my father bought one Christmas "for the family". It cost like $600 and weighed nearly 100 pounds...we had nowhere to put it, so it sat on the kitchen table for months before making it to the garage where it sat for the next few years...used only a dozen times. lol

it's a pretty good platformer. hard and it's possible to get stuck if you don't the first 4 stages in the right order to get all the weapons. you could say, it was the dark souls of the sega genesis. infinite lives (playing into Chakan's immortality after death tricked him) except for the final boss. you reach the final boss which is this weird alien thing and you only get one shot at it. you lose and it's game over, you win and it sends you to the hour glass screen which iirc DOES have some text if you wait like 30 minutes or so.

as for the comic...i dunno. it must be pretty rare cause i've never seen it online aside from that one site where you can buy it from. and that's even counting torrents. plenty of fan art and other stuff but none of the comics.

I wouldn't say "remember" as the computer died before I was born, but the series of commodore family computers, not to be confuse with personal computers. WinVICE is great, but I'd love to know the real thing one day. It can't be rose tinted nostalgia because I didn't exist and my nostalgia lenses are tinted jade. I just love older computers. But everyone knows the C64. What about the PET?

I have a hard time remembering most of my "retro stuff", let alone the more obscure stuff, because I thought 95% of it was junk then. I wanted functional stuff that could live up to their commercials' hype without needing "make-believe".

I had something like the VTech Little Talking Scholar, an educational handheld device that used cards to ask questions. I also remember having something similar that used discs and might have been book-shaped, but I don't want to look that up too. The VTech was hard to identify as is.

We had a few edutainment computer games that I liked. The Amazon Trail was such a terrific and highly memorable game. There was another one where, among other stuff, you're in an art museum and have to find specific paintings once given a simple description. All the paintings and other artifacts in that game were famous or historically significant, and I'm sure I've seen a few of them in person like The Old Guitarist] and Time Transfixed. In particular, I think we got stuck on finding The Starry Night] for many days because we didn't know that we could inspect paintings that were only partially shown (I swear some were 80% cut off).I can't remember if it was part of the art game too, but I distinctly remember a game where you have to mix drinks (taught fractions) in exchange for information/clues and rearrange and stack boxes of different sizes to escape a warehouse, IIRC. My dad did the harder levels for me lol. Too frustrating.

no... actually, chakan might be the game closest in design to dark souls out of that generation of games. there were tons of other hard(er) games out there but none quite like chakan iirc. other high difficulty games out there wouldn't give you infinite lives from the start or send you back to a hub zone when you died. well, there's mega man of course but that lacked the infinite lives aspect.

plus chakan had a pretty unique art style too.

tbh, while i do like Chakan the Forever Man, i'd rather play through Phantom 2040 if given a choice between the 2. Phantom is a pretty large platformer game with a bunch of different branching story paths and endings (the best ending requires you to make a specific set of choices through the story of course) and final bosses. overall a great genesis game and they even made a cartoon series based on it in the 90's which can be found on youtube and other sites these days.

Me, but mine was cracked then stolen. At least I had a Game Boy Pocket to fall back to.

TheHuskyK9 said:

I did. I think I had the original Game Boy too. I eventually bought a used (and potentially ill-gotten) GBA too. Only owned Pokemon games. Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, probably Silver, and Trading Card Game, and I beat them all. I had Yellow for about a year, but I didn't want to play it because I thought the idea behind it was stupid. I thought it was just a "reskin" where your starter had to be Pikachu, but I found out I was very wrong once I did pick it up out of boredom.

I also had guides for Red and Blue and Gold and Silver, maybe the Yellow guide too. -it was at this point I actually decided to look through what I still have, which is still some good loot. I have the Prima Red guide, the official Player's Red, Blue, and Yellow guide, and both the Prima Gold and Silver guide and Nintendo's Gold and Silver guide. I have some other guides and a healthy stack (i.e., 1000-3000 pages?) of various game info printed from mostly Gamefaqs 10+ years ago.

I didn't need guides, but they helped me 100% games and got me much more into them than I would have been otherwise. Guides + GameSharks (GBC, PS1, PS2) gave me the best possible experiences, usually with a heavy cheat run the second time through. Obviously, this was before my boredom with reruns took hold that I mentioned elsewhere.

I have everything that matters to me except my bag of Pokemon games and GBA, which is odd because I cared enough to take my GBC with no games. Lost somewhere. I could take pictures of all that stuff if someone wants, but it's mostly old game systems, cases, and accessories. Almost everything in my "game library" is 10 or more years old.

This should be the most coveted old thing I ever had and still have.

I didn't mention any of this before because none of it was retro or obscure for me, except maybe the GameSharks.

Game guides. There's a useful relic most people don't miss thanks to the internet. Then again, Gamefaqs walkthroughs usually don't have pretty little pictures to look at and you can't bludgeon people with them.

Chakan
Yeah the grim and gloom warrior style theme
but because it was the 90's abit edgy too.
but I kinda like that style the Gritty edgy grim and gloom look.
like Shadow-Man, Nightmare Creatures, and Nine Inch Nails.

it was easier to get

I wonder why they never try to reboot it again?
but do it better, like have good Marvel writers go at it.

I don't think the GBC counts as obscure retro gear, nearly everyone's heard if it. In fact, it literally predates the GBA by one generation of handheld consoles. That said, I never personally owned one, but I know a few people who did.

The Gameboy Camera might count as somewhat obscure. I don't know anyone who has ever owned one and most don't even know what I'm talking about when I mention it.

Also, I miss Lite-Brites. I never see them on toy store shelves anymore.

like Ren & Stimpy? which, and you can find this on youtube, has an origin story episode for the titular characters that was so bad that even the people who worked to make the show strongly disliked. let's just say the physical and psychological animal cruelty aspects were cranked up to eleven. i got curious and watched it once before and for a cartoon, that was hard to watch. if i had to rate the lvl of cringe of that episode alone, i would say painfully cringey for the horrible things those 2 went through. :/

and i also remembered an obscure SNES game just now called Rendering Ranger R2. despite the odd name, it's actually quite well done. made by the same guy who created the turrican series, it features lots and lots of pre-rendered assets and is actually a multi-genre game which is something not seen very often on SNES.

for the most part it's your typical platforming shooter but for a good chunk of the game you play it as a sidescrolling space shooter and the controls get changed as well. one of the more notable aspects of the space shooter section was, for at least 1 boss fight, you could change which direction your ship is facing left/right. on top of that, you have access to several different color coded weapons to choose from and power up from collecting...power-ups. and you can switch between them freely at any time too.

for an obscure SNES game it's surprisingly well made. even the final boss has at least 3-4 phases. though...the plot isn't well explained until after you beat said final boss and some epilogue text appears but that's not all that uncommon for the game gen.

oh and iirc your bombs recharge so...yeah, have fun with this game. :) just remember to not rush things. it's not like ninja gaiden where you have endlessly respawning shit storms coming out of the wood work. you can take things fairly slowly for the most part. at least until the end where OMG WHY IS THAT WALL MOVING SO FAST?! O_O RUN FASTER!

yeah, got a few surprises in the final lvl but nothing too bad. i wouldn't say it's Dr. Wily laser trap bad. and i think we all know how bad those were.

i think Jewel Master (genesis) was another lesser known title. not much info on it really though that's partly because sega didn't give it a credits section after the final boss. it just shows the epilogue then resets. it's a decent platformer though and the ring mechanic was fairly unique for the time i think. you unlock 3 tiers of 4 elemental rings which you could mix and match for various spells. of course, once you have all 4 tier 3 rings you can summon the sword of light or whatever it's called which is game breakingly OP. in fact, the 2nd form of the boss you get the 4th tier 3 ring from can be beaten in a mere 2-4 shots from the sword. enough damage to kill it before the 2nd fight even begins.

i don't remember. was The Ooze an obscure genesis game?

i just remembered something. have any of you ever seen Creepshow? Creepshow intro/outro

lol always loved seeing that intro/outro with the Creep. :) it's creepy with a haunting melody yet not necessarily scary. well, not by today's standards. i'm sure it was pretty scary back when it was first released.

here's the full version of that music used in the credits.

edit: i just remembered something else that is even CREEPIER than creepshow. mainly because this actually happened.

have any of you ever heard or read about the 'Phillip Experiment'?

apparently the researchers involved managed to cause...something to manifest which led to a string of strange and creepy occurences as a result of the experiment. iirc it all came to an abrupt end when, after a while, one of the researchers involved told "Phillip" this: You are not real!

and just like that, all the strange things that were happening stopped. makes you wonder though... what exactly was "Phillip"? a ghost or spirit? or perhaps it was merely a strong manifestation of the researchers own fear and paranoia of the unknown... regardless, it makes for an interesting story and topic for discussion.

nope, my mistake. phillip was the original and this 2nd experiment.

Partially. Growing up, I played NES, SNES, and N64 instead of PlayStation or Sega. So that's a huge factor in why I'm biased towards Nintendo as opposed to other consoles. I've never really had much desire to own other consoles. And to this day, my favorite games are on the N64 and SNES.

well, it was my or rather my aunt & uncles console but the first i played games on. i haven't played much NES in years though. even after getting into the wonderful world of emulation i still never bothered with it all that much.

i'd love to try emulating some sega dreamcast or saturn games but those tend to be annoying to setup. iirc the emulator i last tried saturn games on was kinda weird in the some games would work with some versions of the emulator but not other versions.

hmmm...i wonder what kind of system requirements dreamcast games might require to emulate.

I played Dragon Warrior. I never beat it because it uses the name to determine stat growth. While naming yourself LOTO or Erdrick, the Japanese/English Canon name for the protagonist's grandfather, gives you the best possible stats, it turns out using my real life name gave me the worst possible stat growth. I actually checked. It uses a formula for the letters. I proved it just in case. I had no chance in Hell.

Naming yourself "Cunt" gives you decent growths.

Hyper Police
A series about an universe of humans and monsters co-existing
in a future/"modern" time theme.
The main heroine is Natsuki a half human and half cat demon.
who is a cop who is fighting and protecting her city
who is abit clumsy at her job.

(The manga was made in 1993 and continue to 2004.
there was a anime series too, but it never finish the story,
only the manga wrapped everything up.

The Manga also had more risque things then the anime too,
like nudity, strong language and darker themes.)

Remembered one that most folks here probably have never even heard of:
Scorch, a sitcom with a dragon in it.

And if you're wondering what children's cartoons used to be like, here's Doctor Snuggles. That episode was written by Douglas Adams. (If you actually try watching it, watch the whole thing. It gets... odd.)

Despite being a 90's child, there's tons of fascinating old hardware and DOS game retrospectives on the Lazy Game Reviews channel.

I've binged on those videos starting from about 1/3rd of the way through the second official playlist (when production and presentation hit a happy medium). I'd would definitely recommend a watch if you like a clean, conversational, but also bitingly witty style.

JBVO. That was an interesting show. By the way, the legendary Namek episode is real. Saw it as a kid.

Here's one I've yet to meet anyone with fond (or any, for that matter) memories of. In 2002 Animal Planet tried to air a sitcom called Beware of Dog. Only two episodes were ever aired and they were only played on the premiere night.

legendary namek... are you by any chance referring to that super namekian from dragon ball xenoverse 2? i've never seen the movie he's from but he is one powerful warrior.

I got one of the comics
info on issue 3 of Dalgoda

"Synopsis: Dalgoda has been sent to Earth
from his home planet, Caninda . with a unique
technological secret - the sub space driver.
By sharing this secret with the Earth.
Dalgoda hopes to enlist Earth's aid in defending Canida
against the murderous Nimp.

He is meeting with difficulties."

I just bought this comic too

somehow that reeks of crappy fanfiction plot to my mind. but i...guess it could work...maybe. maybe it's because the names sound ridiculous.

It's a 80's comic that had two series
Series one had 8 comics the other had 4.
yeah it's kinda silly but at the same time being serious.

It's kinda interesting
as it's about a race of alien dog people and humans getting "along"
for a up coming war from another alien race that are bigger
with better technology, as they got 36 months?
to prepare for their arrival for war.

It isn't a comic for kids either
as theres cursing , xenophobic racist tones, sexual tones, dark tones
and some death and low gore.

was browsing around on tv earlier and it looks like disney has started a new Duck Tales series. not sure how i feel about it as it seems like it might be a reboot or something starting the whole series from the beginning.

different art style, different voices and characters in some cases. seems a bit too different for me but i guess those who never got to see the original series might like it.

the first episode has them going after the lost city of atlantis which is entirely different from how the original series began. the title theme seems largely the same though i think they could've done without all the sound effects as it draws away from the music.

overall, not a bad idea but i think i'd rather rewatch the original series whenever i get around to it. it's clear the 2 series are from different time periods and that'll likely affect who wants to see which version.

I heard the (typo lol) Dick Tales new series are in the same universe of
Darkwing Duck and Talespin
and not the classic ones.

What I heard
The new Duck tales reference them
like they exist in their world
then just a easteregg,
and that would be neat idea
having all 3 universe together.

Yeah the new show looks ok
it be hard to get the old voice actors as some of are gone now
just picture as it's own thing then just being a straight copy
as the original show

could be worst, like a continue series with a huge difference.
kinda like Biker Mice from Mars 2006-08 version, I heard orignal fans didn't like that one much
It's like a soft reboot plus and a continue series, it was kinda odd.
I like the character designs but art style could been better.

oh this game looks odd and bad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kzkV5MvOIc

Body break (wiki )

Basically, government-funded health commercials. Dorky, dated, and well-meaning, they could strike on any channel at any time and always starkly contrast with the programming and commercials sandwiching them. For those reasons, Body Break endures in the collective Canadian memory. Almost 30 years later and it's still going.]It seems Netflix requisitioned the concept and original hosts in an interesting spoof.

I thought this LoL parody of the DuckTales opening was pretty great, even though I couldn't say if the LoL references were on point. The DuckTales movie was one of my favorites.

Speaking of movies I liked as a kid, I think the Gumby movie was the first movie I ever saw? Or at least my first VHS or something like that. Was Gumby in fact obscure? I couldn't have known. I also had a little rubber Gumby action figure thingy.

well, i finally got that chakan book i ordered. not very big but still good. 16 page comic book (with that hard kind of paper that doesn't bend very easily), and a smaller picture of the cover art that looks like it'd fit nicely in a frame. and all signed too.

this one is The Warriors Genesis. if you've ever played the sega genesis game then you know how chakan fought death to gain immortality. well, this went into a bit more detail and had more on the backstory of chakan's history before that fight.

i'd say it was worth the $14.

yeah with comic like that hopefully it wasn't that pricey
But I can see rare obscure good comics goes for 50 to 1000 bucks easy
because it's a good comic or just collectors item

not bad, just $13.99 iirc and just as advertised, signed by RAK. both the comic and smaller pic.

i put it all back in the plastic and stuff then put it in my bottom dresser drawer after i finished reading it. bout the safest place for it i figured since that's also where i keep all my video game instruction manuals and stuff and they're all fine.

darn drawer weighs a ton as a result though. that dresser ain't falling over for nothing.

Well that's good then
you might need another drawer
hope the weight limit doesn't break,
well not soon any way.

Ever heard of Beast Wars?
kinda like one of the first CG television animated series

kinda wish they remaster/remake that show.

i don't remember much of it but i know i saw a good bit of the show when it was on tv. don't think the video game adaptation did very well but what i vaguely remember of it, the show was decent. well, at least for its time.

kinda hard to judge an old cartoon (especially CG and 3d) after seeing so many other far better made ones over the years. i mean, i rewatched the original power rangers movie a while back and while decent, the 3d models all had that problem where the lighting gives the reflective surfaces those dreaded unnatural looking reflections. the same problem you often see with eyes in high quality character models.

and now they're making (or is it already out now?) transformers: the last knight movie. so maybe they'll make a transformers cartoon series with that as the theme.

beast wars... i bet the production value for that series was pretty expensive at the time since 3d and CG animation was still pretty new even in the late 90's.
