Topic: To Bump or Not To Bump? (for Tag Alias & Implication suggestions)

TL;DR - Does bumping Alias/Implication suggestions help or hinder the approval process for these pending suggestions?

I noticed recently that tasteful_nudity has regained several dozen posts after getting nuked and the wiki description changed. I was going to bump the invalidation suggestion on forum #235247, but before doing so I realized two things. (1) The invalidation suggestion was pretty old (6 months) and might be considered spamming if I bumped it, and (2) I didn't know if bumping old alias/implication suggestions helped or hurt the rate at which they are approved/denied.

Hence I'm heading here to ask for advice on what to do with these old alias/implication suggestions... To Bump or Not To Bump?

Sorry if this is considered spamming, but I originally posed this question on forum #241121 and got no responses, so I figured I'd have better luck asking on a new forum thread instead.

Personally, if it's for something that has been posted exactly as you were gonan suggest it, or close to it, or something, I'd go ahead and bump it. there's not anything intrinsically wrong with bumping a post, especially like that which is basically saying "yeah, I also looked into this and agree that it should be done.

But, that's just my opinion :)

The TL;DR on bumping is almost always does not help or hinder the approval process of an alias/implication. There is no difference between reaction times because there are too many variables in play to determine whether it was the bump, or inevitability. You should focus on helpful bumps, not bumping simply to push it up the queue.

In length, the approval process has many more things to it. Usually, the first and most obvious question asked is "is this a good idea?", and answering this (often by showing support via +1 or showing otherwise with -1) may help speed up the process of its approval or disapproval. From there, it gets less predictable: perhaps the alias was translated wrong, or the implication goes to a now-dead tag. In these cases, bumping the posts to notify the staff helps make their decision, but it does not hasten the decision.

This is because there are unaccountable variables: are the responding admins busy; is the site experiencing problems; maybe this suggested alias/implication is not the best course of action, and is being discussed by the staff amongst themselves. Et cetera et cetera, in these cases bumping a thread does not aid it unless you are providing relevant information. But even then, there is no telling how beneficial bumping a thread will be.

Finally, there are some immeasurable variables. For instance, it is a safe bet that simple and obvious aliases will be handled faster, but just how "simple" and "obvious" is the alias? A misspelling is one thing, but suggesting a massive tag to be aliased away will often require review, even if you say "but it's obviously correct". Then there are cases where despite no matter correct you are, for one reason or another it will take some time before it gets answered. For instance, I have several mass-tag aliases/suggestions for various series, and while probably 99% of them are right, that's still a lot of tags to write up an alias or implication for. In this case, bumping the thread doesn't expedite the process either, but you can still be of benefit to the thread.

Finally, don't be afraid to bump threads with relevant information. So long as it's not "+1, I support this because it's good" or other vaguities, you'll help the thread and it's inevitable[/b] action taken. It should be worth more to make sure that the right choice was made over how fast it was made.

But what about older suggestions (3-6 months old or older) that are still pending? There's many pending suggestions that I hope aren't forgotten, but I wasn't sure if bumping those threads would be helpful or how bumping those threads would impact the approval process.

Edit: Didn't see the next message until after I posted this one. Thank you!

The admins can simply view the alias/implications list and click through to threads for reasoning there, there's no need for it to be bumped in the forums.
