Topic: Should Mewtwo really be classified as a feline?

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I didn't know whether to tag this in the "General" or "Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions" categories, so I apologize if I chose incorrectly.

However, I have noticed something that I don't understand regarding the character Mewtwo. Aside from what I've seen on discussion boards, in fan fiction, and in other (UNOFFICIAL) wikis, Mewtwo is often referred to as being "cat-like."

I have yet to come across official confirmation about whether Mewtwo should be categorized as a feline. I recognize that "Mew" is closer to being like a cat than Mewtwo, but that's only really in its name and not necessarily its appearance.

Does the tag really fit, or is this a result of fan speculation? I ask this because if you keyword search "Mewtwo" and "feline," it brings up 14 pages of artwork. If someone could provide any source from an official Pokemon product which notes that the character is actually feline, that would be great. Because I don't think the tag belongs.

That's a case by case scenario. NO pokemon should ever imply another species tag (Except for Eeveelutions), but it's okay to tag something like feline when in that specific image it looks like it's feline.

If somebody's just blanket tagging something like that even when it doesn't, report them.

Stuff like this, I'd say shouldn't get the tag.

It's actually more than one person doing it, from what I've observed. But I shall.

this stuff should be tagged case by case basis. if it looks like feline, tag it as such. if it does not look like feline, it should not be tagged as feline. it depends entirely on what the mewtwo looks like in the specific image

If this is what you're talking about Link_(wolf_form) no longer implies wolf, but it dosn't appear like anyone ever went through and fixed the posts that got tagged wrong.

Well, I fixed the ones that were actually tagged as alternate_species, and also went and removed link from link_(wolf_form) link -hylian -human posts.

I don't particularly feel like handling the mewtwo feline posts though since I'm not sure where we should draw the line.

Honestly... "feline" is typically described by a few features: (speaking generally, esceptins may apply.... and typically, as compared to a canine like a wolf)

  • shorter muzzle
  • 'rounder' face
  • ears that are generally smaller and more of a rounded triangle
  • A tail that is commonly longer, and generally uniform in width.
  • retractable claws
  • Fur

Mewtwo... rarely, if ever, meets these requirements. While generally having a rounder face and shorter muzzle, the problem comes with the ears-- where typically, they're drawn as blunt horns. Cats don't have horns.

Further, the tail is thick, tapering and generally resembles a reptiles or dragon's more than a mammals. ALso, he's rarely, if ever, drawn with fur, or claws.

I mean...

If I had to pick between "yoshi' and 'feline" for this mewtwo: post #1298341 ... I'd pick Yoshi.

There are a few exceptions, but they really and obviously break model, in my opinion:

Not saying "you should do this" or anything, just saying that in my opinion, there should probably be less than a 2 or 3 dozen mewtwo feline posts, haha.

Users tend to tag pokemon by outside information, that's nothing new. I've lost the count of times that someone's tried mass tagging all dragon-type pokemon as dragon (including ones such as Altaria and Shelgon), etc.

Just report and clean them up as soon as you spot them. Though usually those get spotted months later, too late to report 'em.
