Topic: Cropped ad pictures

Posted under General

A while ago I remember having a discussion about advertisements done through submissions and having some policy regarding it, and most importantly I remember the infamous dreamcast getting a lot of his Patreon advertisements removed from being cropped

Blitzdrachin has been doing this for quite some time, with the plea to people to subscribe to her Patreon with a disclaimer for people to use the blacklist if they don't like it. Cropped even has its own tag, funnily enough.

Did something change since ? Am I missing something ? I tried to look for any rule changes about advertisements and crops and couldn't find anything. Is there any reason why it's fine for her but not for another person to do it ? I do have the feeling that Dreamcast's ads were by far worse with P logos everywhere, but for obvious reason I can't confirm it anymore, but the question still remains to why it is fine for someone to advertise this way with cropped previews but not someone else

Yea, it is odd that the cropped versions are staying. They should be deleted when the superior posts are uploaded, yet they weren't. They aren't breaking the advertising rule, though, because their advertisements are kept in descriptions.

Third party crops are pretty much all deleted almost instantly, because they count as edit of original content and usually are simply inferior to original.

It's the first party handling where things get bit messy sometimes. Yes, advertisement guidelines were revised because of the rise of stuff like people using patreon logos to censor genitalia (Dreamcastzx being one of the biggest examples on top of their other things like cropping of comic pages which made no sense because of them being from comic with continuation), which means that content made purely to advertise are now mostly getting deleted outright. It's really easy to handle if there's poor sketch with huge text of SB: $200, AB: $500 or if there's that patreon logo over genitalia, but then there are things like HD quality crops and pictures where there's text like "buy full pack for $10" in the corner.

That's why if there's still enough focus on the artwork itself, it's usually approved. Because there still has to be middle road where everyone benefits and it's not useful for anyone if we started to ban all posts where there's patreon logo anywhere in it.

While I can't speak with finality, I notice 2 glaring differences between Dreamcast's and Blitz's methods & cropped images:

Dreamcast later released the full images and the cropped versions were replaced as inferior versions. Blitz does not offer their full versions (or so it appears). Dreamcast's images were also possessing blatant advertisements in the image itself, whereas Blitz keeps it in the description for as far as I saw.

Therefore, it makes sense that the cropped images are kept, they're the only ones available and aren't breaking the advertising rule by keeping it in the description.

Blitz crops are usually of higher quality than the later on released full versions, so it makes sense to keep them both.

You can read my own take on the situation on post #1305674 comments.

However if there are crops which are 1:1 (meaning they have same pixel density on area where the crop is from) or worse from full version, please flag those for deletion as inferior, similar to any other similar situation:

So, they basically count as their own picture as they aren't a carbon copy of their complete version? While that makes sense, I feel like there needs to be something like a tag to denote that, or that Blitz should should say in the description that this version is a higher-quality crop not from final image. That could clarify the crop = inferior correlation.

Similar to censored and uncensored if censored is PNG from pixiv and uncensored is highly compressed JPG from twitter (or even worse, on furaffinity so now it's also really small). They are still technically identical, but because of the aspect that neither one is superior, they are both kept.

Crops and censors are just couple examples, there are tons of cases like this where we choose to keep two versions of exactly the same thing, even though of course we try to keep the most superior version only in most cases to avoid redundancy. Not sure what tag we would be using with these, but with blitz case it would be cropped and your eyes™.

Also you have the power to message the artist or edit the description yourself if you feel like there's stuff missing or not informed.

I try to avoid using "the power..." because I have absolutely no authority whatsoever. Unless I'm first to act, that's better saved for the people who know what they're doing since they're less likely to fuck up.
