You cannot pay for privileged status. I cannot remember clearly but I believe getting privileged is as simple as sending an email to [email protected] and asking them nicely to upgrade your account, but don't take my word for it. It's also given out to people who go far out of their way to help improve the site (Bat Week).

For now ads pay for most (if not all) of the monetary cost of runningthe site, but as I understand, just barely. Without any other method of increasing profit, anything that significantly increases server load would require a better server to keep up, which would mean them paying out the ass.
