There are three general groups of animals referred to as the buffalo:
- Bison, consisting of the European_bison/wisent and the American_bison, the latter being the animal most commonly referenced by the term "buffalo" in American media. Alongside domestic cattle, they are members of the Bovina biological subtribe.
- Bubalinans, or animals of the Bubalina subtribe, including the African_buffalo/cape_buffalo and members of the Bubalus genus, including the water_buffalo, anoa (or midget_buffalo), and tamaraw (or Mindoro_dwarf_buffalo). Aside from both being bovine, Bubalina and Bovina are not closely related.
- Fish of the Ictiobus genus, which are also specified as buffalo_fish.
Currently, bison and cape_buffalo both imply buffalo, which is overwhelmingly used to describe American_bison on this site. There seem to be three options to ensure accuracy in tagging and clarify usage.
- Allow buffalo to refer to American_bison specifically, removing the implication from cape_buffalo and reversing bison so that it is implied by buffalo instead of the reverse.
- Adjust buffalo to refer to bubalinans, removing the implication from bison and keeping cape_buffalo's.
- Depreciate buffalo entirely and turn it into a disambiguation tag, removing all implications from tags.
