There are three general groups of animals referred to as the buffalo:

Currently, bison and cape_buffalo both imply buffalo, which is overwhelmingly used to describe American_bison on this site. There seem to be three options to ensure accuracy in tagging and clarify usage.

went with the genus definition

bison and true_buffalo are now their own (umbrella) tags with a few tags under each, as well as some aliases with those if needed to fit current standards

aliased:

buffalo -> buffalo_(disambiguation)

cleaned out everything hit by the disambiguation and moved those posts to better tags

now if you'll excuse me my brain has melted so i'm gonna go die for a bit
