Topic: Calling all robot, android, mecha, etc. experts! (wiki project)

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I may need a bit of help to put this together. I'm currently attempting to gather together all of the robo-mecha-droid-type tags for the wiki and I want to get some feedback from someone who knows what they are talking about (i.e., not me).

Specifically I'm seeking:

  • Robo-related tags I'm missing
  • Potentially useful aliases/implications
  • Corrections and stuff

I tried to organize this as best I could, but it may be a bit messy.

What I have so far:
Tags already implicated:
Tags with no (significant) implications
  • android - Humanoid-shaped robots. (440)
  • anthroid - "Anthro androids" - A furry term someone made up but never caught on here. (15) Aliased to android
  • biomechanical - I have no clue. (13)
  • bionic - Implies cybernetics for some reason.
  • cybernetics - Machine parts for living things. (116/63)
  • cyborg - "Part-creature-part-machine" in a similar sense as "part-creature-part-human" meaning anthro. (987)
  • droid - Reminds me of how taur is to centaur...but not really. (11)
  • gynoid - Since andro- refers to "man", this apparently needed to exist for women. (30) Aliased to android
  • living_aircraft - See living_machine. (117)
  • living_machine - Killer lawnmowers and aeromorphs apparently. (87)
  • mecha - Giant battle robots/suits and apparently anything that looks even vaguely Japanese. (182)
  • power_armor - Related. See Iron Man. (89)
  • sexdroid - A droid you can fuck. Not much to say here. (23)

That's... not exactly what a turret is, but anyway, I don't see why turret_gun needs to be a tag when we already have turret_(portal)

I tried that already. Nobody agreed. I tried again with an implication but I don't think it's been answered.

That was actually more part of my own notes because I didn't have a better name for it at the time. I was assuming it was related to "a low, flat armored gun emplacement, typically one that revolves, in a ship, aircraft, fort, or tank." and just sort of summarized that.

I agree with you completely that turret_gun is probably unnecessary. Granted I have no idea what a turret_gun is or how it differs from turret_(portal), but seeing as there are only 2 posts tagged with turret_gun it doesn't seem to be doing much at the moment.

It seemed to look more promising with the implication than with the alias but both seemed to kinda get forgotten about. These mech* tags have needed to be cleaned up for a while but it's like we are more interested in furry porn or something. :x

I couldn't help but notice that Tokaido did a pretty detailed writeup on cyborg/robot/androids in forum #141131. If we can come to a consensus on this thread it shouldn't be too hard to piece the rest together actually.

I've been very VERY slowly working on this myself. I'm trying to clean up these tags as best I can with limited free time, but having help would be greatly appreciated!

I'll try to post later with all the weird, surprisingly good, or useless tags I've found, there are a lot of them.

Ah and finally the machine-related tags are more ordered. I've made the following changes:

These merge mech (unused), mechanical, and machine into a single tag.

This simplifies a couple tags that have been more recent additions.

Misc. cleanup and fixes.

  • Implication: biomechanical -> machine (denied) - Barely tagged, so I'm leaving this as is. I tagged it out but I doubt it will be much of a problem.
  • Implication: sexdroid -> android (denied) - 1 user added this as well as a few other irrelevant tags which I removed manually.
  • Implication: droid -> machine (denied) - Mostly Star Wars related and only a single post was tagged since 7 months ago, so I just tagged them out.

I'm leaving the turret-related tags and mecha alone for the moment because I'm not entirely sure what to do with them still, but the bulk of it is in place now. I made a simple tag tree in machine already (also written below), but it's still missing on the other wikis (which I'll be fixing up later today).

Maybe living_machine should be implicated to inanimate?
It's the current main species tag for 'living objects', such as toasters, cars, etc.

It kind of overlaps with living_machine, but is slightly broader because it also covers things such as living food etc.

I'm not 100% on this one but I think any exceptions/mistags because of it would likely be present with inanimate already even without this implication.

That being said, I think it's a good idea that would probably work fine in practice, and might even help to strengthen usage of the inanimate tag.

Oh, I didn't even notice that someone had just written a wiki entry for inanimate yesterday. And got the definition wrong. So yeah, mistags might be a problem.

I'm not sure what else to call it, though. Animate_inanimate? Edit: Huh. That's actually what TVTropes calls it. Animate Inanimate Object.

living machine:

any form of silicon based life form (we organics are typically carbon based) could technically fall under the category of living machine.

transformers for example are fully sentient, self-aware robots basically and disregarding that age of extinction movie where it was said that they were built by aliens it could be possible for something like that to evolve naturally.

carbon, silicon, just 2 different paths of evolutions.

edit: hmmm...i wonder what it'd be like to meet such a naturally occurring side of evolution. (well, a peaceful specimen obviously)that could be rather interesting.

mecha:

a mecha could be anything from a gundam, to a wanzer, to core (armored core), etc. now that i think of it, in a way, those all also fall under the powered armor category of tech as well.

powered armor:

see mecha but the exoskeletal suit Samus wears throughout the metroid franchise counts as this as well. i bet that suit would weigh a ton if the enercy cells ever ran out with her still inside. definately wouldn't be easy to explore like that.

Implication: sexdroid -> android (or maybe robot, or something other than sexdroid)

this one is kinda obvious. sexdroid in this implication would probably just be an android constructed with sex related activities as the intended use.

and that's about all i've got for now. you can thank the mega man franchise for my love of robotics. :)

I added a wiki entry for turret.
By the way, "Turret" technically refers to little guard towers like the ones you see around castle walls, with "Gun turret" specifically referring to their modern incarnation.

But I doubt anyone will use it that way.

just sharing a fun fact :\

Hey, as an artist who draws and appreciates living aircraft that are not aeromorphs, this bugs me. Not to necrobump but I was pointed to this post after making my own suggestion.

I think we can agree that characters like Dusty Crophopper from Planes, Ratbat's living aircraft art and other non-humanoid air planes aren't aeromorphs. The latter being very humanoid and only 20% at most vehicle.

I want to blacklist aeromorphs but can't because it defaults to living aircraft

Have you noticed the aircraft_humanoid tag?

Seems no one is using it properly. There's only a handful of images there. Not to mention an aeromorph is an aircraft_humanoid, so idk why there's a separate tag
