Does pit_bull refer to the dog type? Or does it refer to a specific breed of pit bull? Because we have the american_pit_bull_terrier, but there are other pit bull breeds that AFAIK haven't been tagged.

the pit bull is pretty hard for the average person to identify properly. there's a whole slew of dog species that are ID'd as a pit bull when they aren't.

Very true. Wikipedia mentions the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bully, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and even says that sometimes the American Bulldog is included.
