Haruhi is the short version of the show title, hence the purple tag.
Should alias haruhi to the full name, the_melancholy_of_haruhi_suzumiya

Okay, I don't know anything about this franchise.
looking at http://e621.net/tag?name=*haruhi*&type=&order=date&commit=Search
I see two 'title' tags, 3 character names, and looksl ike 2 unrelated tags.
Should Haruhi alias to the character name or the title?
Is that right?
Also I would appreciate it if someone could go in and clean up a but please. especially the haruhi tag that could be used aparently for either name or title?

Sounds good. I think haruhi should refer to the character, but I guess it's a matter of opinion.

I'd say alias it to the title since it's a purple tag.

opinions are what matter. For what i'ts worth I agree, because the charracter name will then imply the title, so yeah

It being a purple tag jsut means that someone decided to tag it as copy:haruhi at some point. It could be changed by tagging it as char:haruhi at any time. :P
actually... there. no more purple tag.

But what about the other full names? There's quite a few, since it's a series of light novels as well as a show. The names are "The X of Haruhi Suzumiya", where x ∈ {Melancholy, Sigh, Boredom, Disappearance, Rampage, Wavering, Intrigues, Indignation, Disassociation, Astonishment, Surprise}. As far as I can gather, "Haruhi Suzumiya" is the accepted term for referring to the series as a whole. It is also the name of the main character. Probably haruhi_suzumiya_(series) would be best as the series tag.

As I said, I don't know anything about this franchise. That's pretty much me saying "hey, guys who obviously know something about this, help me with this so I know what to alias", and why I havn't touched anything yet.
now, let's see...

Also there appears to be a manga and a film.
I was GOING to say "well, light novels, they don't have drawn images.." but then with the realization of a film and manga, that DOES change it a bit.
Hmmm...
the light books have a lot of titles.
the manga has 'melancholy' through all of the chapters.
the anime is also melancholy
the film, though, is disappearance.
and the video games arrrre... promise, perplexity, excitement, parallel, series, .. .reminiscence and.. uh.. majong. Yeah.
okay.
um.... hm.
ALright, Haruhi_suzumiya_(series) works for me.. theeeeeeeeeennnn...
the_melancholy_of_haruhi_suzumiya alaises to haruhi_suzumiya_(series)
haruhi_suzumiya aliases to suzumiya_haruhi
haruhi aliases to suzumiya_haruhi
Suzumiya_haruhi will imply haruhi_suzumiya_(series)
and for good measure
suzumiya_haruhi_no_shoishitsu aliases to haruhi_suzumiya_(series)
and that will cover the movie too.
I'd make separate ones for each chapter, too, but considering that half of our haruhi uploads are cosplay, I really doubt they'd EVER be used.

Haruhi is the given name.

In Japanese, the family name comes first.

But the English localization always flips the name around, and since this is primarily an English-speaking site...
Granted, I'm not sure if Haruhi ever was localized.

I don't know if we have official policy on this matter, but it's an easy change...
However, my thought on it is that last name first is the "right" way to say the name.
*shrugs*

In Japanese her name is given as 涼宮ハルヒ (Suzumiya Haruhi). Haruhi Suzumiya is the name given in the English versions.
