Reason: These aliases are inconsistent with paws not being aliased to feet, and they decrease both descriptiveness and ease of searching (for example, paw_fetish -feet (i.e. foot_fetish -feet as currently aliased) being the best way to find paw fetish images is absurd.) Implicating them might make sense, although paws does not currently imply feet.

Some of the incorrectly aliased tags do represent the same things as each other (e.g. paws_rub + paw_rub), but as far as I know, de-aliasing paws_rub -> foot_rub and re-aliasing paws_rub -> paw_rub cannot be done in the same script, so I'll make a second bulk update request for those changes and note there that this one is a prerequisite to that one.

EDIT: The bulk update request #278 (forum #296657) has been rejected by @Millcore.

Posting the second part here since I can't properly request it yet because won't be valid without the first part already applied.

Anything that reference hindpaws refers to a character's foot paws. Those aliases should stay intact or at least maintain the foot relation somehow. Is barepaws really something people would use for something other than feet? Hands after all are expected to be bare.

To be honest, I think paws and paws-related things should be or stay aliased away. As paws can refer to either hands or feet, for simplicity's sake, we should refer to the relevant extremities as either hands or feet rather than try to figure out exactly what paws might be referring to or whether X species has paws and Y species doesn't. Thus, paws should be aliased away rather than all those various aliases removed.

Aliasing paws -> feet would make paws match images that definitely do not contain paws. This seems like a bad idea to me. If paws are deemed to not merit tagging, it would make more sense to alias paws -> invalid_tag.

I would much rather keep paws and I feel it isn't really that ambiguous. If we really had to come up with a definition, the stricter version would be any appendage that might contain pawpads. It would not include most avian and reptile feet. The broader definition would include most if not all reptilian, and dragon feet. and mammal feet excluding humanoids and unguligrades.

If we really wanted to make it consistent, we would adapt it into a structured format.

  • animal_feet
    • Scaled foot types
      • bird_feet
      • reptile_feet
    • hooves - May not refer to feet. hoof_hands is the tag for the hand version and it rather undertagged.
    • paws - Used for the feet typically covered in fur and more rarely feathers. Be aware that hybridized humanoid feet also exist in this form. Call them hybrid_paws or humanoid_paws if you must. The hindpaw tag is used to refer to actual feet.
    • insect, and every other kind of weird exceptions fill in the rear.

I appreciate the paws tag and I'm certain there are a lot of other people who do as well.

Fiiine, although it sounds like furries being cutesy for no other reason than to be cutesy. :\

My general rules of thumb are thus:

Paws and hands refer to the same anatomical structures. The difference: hands have nails while paws have claws. Paws don't apply to wing/hand hybrids; those ought to be wing_hands. Hoof_hands would be hands that are basically just hooves with no thumbs, most often seen on anthro horses.

Footpaws are not synonymous with feet. A foot is everything between and including the ankle and the toes. Footpaws are the toes and balls of the feet of clawed mammals, ie. where the pawpads are. In digitigrade mammals, that's the part of the foot that contacts the ground while the arch, heel, and ankle are up in the air. Hooves would be the ungulate version of footpaws although it would be more accurate to say they're just the toes instead of the toes and balls of the foot. Hindpaws are redundant when feet will do just as well, but if we must, the difference between hindpaws and boring, plain, old feet is the same as between paws and hands: claws vs. nails.

Claws are basically the pointy things on the end of fingers or toes. A character with paws has fingers. A character with footpaws has toes.

Though they have claws, birds don't have paws of any sort, just feet and wings or wing_hands.

Your mileage will likely vary.
