EDIT: The bulk update request #346 (forum #298385) has been approved by @Millcore.

I like a lot of these, but I'm not sure tutu should imply ballet. It's become more of a general purpose garment over time and looking at the images tagged at least some of them don't seem like ballet to me.

That seems rather odd to me. Tutus have always seemed like one of those clothing items specifically meant for ballet.

The bulk update request #1273 is pending approval.

Reason: As a person with a huge dancewear kink, I'm very grateful for this update. To contribute, I'm adding a few corrections:

  • The types of shoes alternately referred to as ballet high heels and ballet boots are actually called ballet heels. That's what they're sold as if you buy them IRL, that's what they're actually called by people. Some people call them ballet boots, but that term can also refer to ballet practice booties and theatrical dance costume boots, so ballet heels is the best tag for us here. Additionally, ballet heels are not dancewear at all, they're actually horribly restrictive to movement. They're actually a ballet-inspired form of fetishwear, with the movement restriction they create serving a bondage kink.
  • Similarly, ballet flats are not dancewear either, but are a generic term for women's shoes with flat soles, often being like high heels without the heel part. Inspired by ballet slippers, but not actually used for dance at all.
  • Ballet refers to a specific kind of dance, and so a dancer may be depicted as a ballerina, wearing a leotard, a ballet dress (which is a ballet leotard with an attached skirt), pointe shoes, ballet slippers, whatever. But if she's not dancing, practicing, stretching, somehow engaged in the act of ballet, then the ballet tag would not be applicable.
  • Ballet slippers and pointe shoes are very different things. Ballet slippers are flexible, usually leather and suede, and are never worn en pointe (ballet tiptoes). Pointe shoes are rigid, usually made of silk or satin over cardboard, and have a distinctive flat toe point to facilitate the wearer going en pointe.
  • Finally, the word tutu can refer to just the skirt part of the garment, but they're normally dresses, not skirts (meaning the top and bottom parts of the garment are attached). Tutus indeed can be and frequently are worn outside the context of ballet.

Since the system doesn't let you request new aliases to a tag that's already aliased away, I'll file these requests later, when they become possible:

alias ballet_boots -> ballet_heels
alias ballet_heel -> ballet_heels
alias ballet_high-heel -> ballet_heels
alias ballet_high-heels -> ballet_heels
alias ballet_high_heel -> ballet_heels
alias ballet_high_heels -> ballet_heels
alias ballet_highheel -> ballet_heels
alias ballet_highheels -> ballet_heels
imply ballet_heels -> high_heels
alias ballet_flat -> ballet_flats

Why does ballet have to be so difficult? I don't know, there's a lot of terminology with a lot of nuance, and it's hard to keep track of it all. But I hope this helps make it a little bit easier. Once again, thanks!
